Sunday evening just before dark, I had a deer come up behind me as I was setting on the ground on a grassy firebreak road, my adrenalin was pumping hard. To my back where the deer was, is mostly thick bramble, briars, sumac, small trees and tall wild grass so I couldnt see the deer.
I kept my rifle trained down the firebreak thinking any second this scoundrel would emerge and give me a target.
Didnt happen, my adrenaline had run its course, leaving my mouth dry and my body shivering like it was 5 degrees out.
I stood up and vrabbed my fold up chair and started walking up the road towards my son who set at the crossroads watching a 350 yd straight in it. He said, " where the hell you going?", I told him thats it Im done, he said no way old man get back down there and wait til Im done hunting, and I agreed this was best.
I headed back to the spot I had set in since 12 noon, and only a deer sneaking through heavy brush was my only action of the weekend.
As soon as my butt hit ground I saw a deer cross the firebreak at a distance my son and I laser ranged earlier at 236 yds, I slowly got into the prone position, and took the safety off and waited, only a second went by and the deer again made his way across the road. I took aim at 1" behind his shoulder and squeezed the round off, and saw him jump and run at the shot.
I had the awareness, (for some reason) to pick up my empty brass which laid smoking about arms length away.
I stood up and headed down the break, the only light I had was my phone, and so the scouring for blood began, I searcged the road for what seemed like 15 mins when my son walked down on me holding a bright flashlight, so now were looking with 2 lights.
My son told me he heard the deer get hit, and then run and crash, but still we found no blood until we walked 20 yds further down than what Id thought the impact took place,.
We headed down the other side of road and I found a huge blood spatter and told Chris my son, to shine over here I got blood. It wasnt long before we could smell him and then found him.
He was an 8 point, maybe 2 1/2 years old, maybe Taylorce1 could post his picture later for me,.
But I didnt take him with my latest build, I took him with a rifle I had purchased and traded back in the early 90's.
Its a MarkX, .270 winchester, shooting 150 grn Btips from Nosler and a stout load of Magpro, cool hunt, 148 lbs of venison on the ground, and I had to dress the deer in total darkness as my son went back to car for deer buggy........never forget it, the hunt that I almost gave up on, but my son said no.......pretty cool...
