Dan Wesson revolvers --- show and tell...!

I started looking at the Dan Wesson revolvers in .44 Mag and thought they had some nice lines and features, especially that WICKED Alaskan Guide model with the vented bbl., matte finish and Hogue grip.
In one place I saw a .445 SuperMag that said it would fire that round, plus .44 Mag and .44 Spl. Is that true of the .445 SuperMag? Versatile, if true.

The prices seem to vary, but overall they look like good guns. Are they?
Can you tell me more about them?

That is pretty awesome. Yes, I believe they can shoot any rimmed cartridge you can fit in there that shoots a .429 bullet, provided there's enough powder to push it out of the end of the barrel.

:D "...and that's why I like the Dan Wesson revolvers, Bob...it's that kind of versatility that makes these firearms 'America's Choice'."
;)

The top is my Monson 15-2. The bottom is my new 722. Nice guns, cheap for what you get. Exceptionally accurate and fun to shoot. Some of my favorite blasting revolvers I have.

Dan Wesson

I have been pleased with two Dan Wessons for years, a six inch stainless 357 with a heavy vent barrel and a 44 mag with both eight inch heavy vent eight and a 10 inch vent barrels. The 44 is for IHMSA compitition and hunting. The 357 is for ranch carry and general all around use, both are very accurate and have extra good trigger pull [after a little tuning]. Wouldn't take for either. The Dan Wesson is second to none in strength, if you like hot reloads. :)

Dan Wesson 722?

Peter M. Eick:

1)I really like your stainless 722! How does it compare with your Monson made DW revolver, in terms of overall quality and trigger pull(Despite the difference in caliber?)?

2)I have never fired my recently acquired(NIB)Dan Wesson VH22, with the eight inch barrel(And with two matching barrels(A 4" and a 6")that was also, made in Monson, Mass!

3)How much does one of the new(Stainless)722 DW revolvers(Like yours)cost nowadays? Were you able to get any kind of a deal on yours?

4)If I can(After I pull my DW out of storage)I'll try to post a picture of it here?

Thanks!

Question 1). The current manufacturer is making better guns then the older Monson guns based upon about a half a dozen examples I have seen. I would have no qualms about buying another one (beyond my Razorback).

Question 2). I am not sure how much they go for new, but I bought this one (722) used for just over $300 with tax. I would guess it was shot very little from the wear marks, probably just a box or two. Extremely nice gun. If I remember right my Monson was $285, but I did not look it up.

Question 3) Please post your pictures. It would be nice to see some others.

I thought about a pistol pack for my 722, but I really like revolvers with 6" or thereabouts barrels. My 8.75" 15-2 (shown above) is a bit long for me, and my 4" diamondback and 2" detective specials are too short. After thinking about it for a while. Why buy a pistol pack when I would only shoot one barrel length.

Dan Wesson VH22

1)Yes, I had the same problem, regarding barrel length! I wanted mostly, a four-inch-and, maybe a six-inch! However, my DW VH22 came with the eight-inch barrel on the gun. I obtained both a NIB, four-inch and a six-inch-but, I'm sure that I would never shoot the eight-inch barrel! I was lucky to have found matching Monson, Mass made VH22 barrels and shrouds for my Monson made DW VH22!

2)I'll see about posting some pictures of my DW VH22?

3)Thanks, for the information that you gave, regarding your DW revolvers!

4)I really like the quality, of my particular DW revolver! It came with the fancy(Looks like Zebrawood?)target stocks, on the gun! I have several other styles of new DW revolver stocks also!

That is true. I usually don't but have fired .44Mag and .44Spcl out of mine. I prefer the .445 SuperMag myself, but I'm a recoil junkie. I also have the .357Maximum and a couple of 15-2's. All of my DW's have been very reliable and comfortable and accurate to shoot.

The pics aren't great - these were taken with my old digital camera.

445 Supermag

Though I can't responed to the 445 remarks mentioned, I do own a 414 supermag. I have shot 41mags through it. I've a 6in barrel and both the 414SM and the 41Mag are a piece of cake to shoot accurately as compared to my lighter S&W's in the 41mag. The real avantage to the Supermag as I see is they really shine with the heavier bullets and the barrel change capabilites are desired on my part. Just my 2cents and hope it helps....rob

Seeing the 'lesser' cartridges lined up with the SuperMag is extremely informative.
Nothing like a good visual to help with understanding the concept.
Thank you!

Mike B,
That 445 supermag is awesome! Is that a 4" barrel? What model number gun is it?

How much more powerful is a 445 super mag, than a 44 magnum? I searched for a trajectory chart, or some info on the 445 supermag, but I couldn't find any. How does the supermag compare to a 454 Cassull?

Thanks, Shane

It is a 4" barrel. The model is a .445 Supermag Dan Wesson First Issue.

It can be loaded significantly hotter than the .44 Magnum. I don't have any numbers in front of me.
