Dan Wesson Pictures - And Questions...

OK, here is a picture of the Dan Wesson that I bought recently. I paid $199 - it came with the tools pictured and also another shorter barrel (not pictured) and smaller grip. It also has a briefcase that they all fit into, but it smells pretty bad...

Anyway, it is a Model 15-B, made in Monson. Can anyone tell me approximate vintage. Also, what is the tool on the right for?

Setting barrel gap seems to be similar to adjusting valves, you have to get it close then account for the barrel turning a little when you tighten the barrel nut. Anyone give me some pointers? I also tried leaving the feeler gauge in and pinching it with the barrel, then tightening the nut. It didn't come with a feeler gauge so I used the ones that I have for adjusting car valves.

About all I can say is it is a pre 1980 model as the one I bought in 1980 had interchangeable front sights with an Allen screw that held it in. The rear sight on mine was different and the barrel shroud did not extend to the bottom of the frame. On the other hand your gun does not have the external front barrel retaining nut so must be made after the early ones.

if i'm not mistaken, and i very well could be, you have the first modification to the DW (maybe that's the "B") which was the recessing of the original (external) barrel nut. the 2nd gen guns did away with the shoud extending over the front of the frame. the give away was the rear sight...definately 1st gen

that would explain why you have both tools. the one on the right is from the original gun...the external nut would fit into the cut-out.

Have not seen many like that. Very rare Model 15. Of course like all DW's the "Collector Value" pretty much resembles the current stock market.
My best guess. Mid to late 1970's production Model 15. Probably from one on the first batches as it has a Model 12 rear sight if I'm not mistaken. Dan was a true Yankee, use up what you got before you get new. Might explain the Model 12 barrel wrench as that had the screwdriver end to adjust the rear sight. The new tool has 3 different size allen wrenches, one is for the rear sight windage and elevation adjustments.
In the don't quote me department, I think current barrels and internal parts will interchange for the most part. The shrouds, if you need one are going to be a gun show hope and look item.
