Dan Wesson experts

I'm probably asking the old guys. I'm considering a DW in .44 magnum for kicks and grins. Besides it being a Monson model, what should I look for in one of these guns? Are there any typical problems that should be looked for? What is a good price range? And, where can you get the things that might not be there with the gun like barrel wrenches? Are they hard to find?

Buy it. Superb gun in all ways.

One of if not the most accurate out of the box 44 Mags's. These guns dominated the IHMSA matches when I was shooting. If you were serious, you had a Dan Wesson. They took more hot loads than any gun should be asked and just kept on going. Mine is still as tight as as the day I bought it.
As with any mechanical device there will always be some less than perfect examples, but I am not aware of any chronic issues with the Model 44 or 744. The biggest problems these guns had were caused by amateur and pro gunsmiths that had no idea as to how to properly tune a DW. The DW action is different and has a different feel because of the short throw. This is not a bad thing just takes a little getting used to.
As to price here's the best part, DW's have relatively low resale values though the Model 44 probably holds better than most other DW models. Going price for a used Monson Model 44 around here is $375 to $425 depending upon condition.

Take Care

OK. They don't hold great value. They are one of the finest target/range/competition revolvers ever made. I guesstimate prices from $299.00 to $350.00. The tricky part is locating grips. I spent a day browsing through different stores to come up with a variety for my own. Used grips in 6 different styles including Pachmayr rubber cost my $175.00. Rare and unique grips. As for locating parts and pieces, gunsmith@cz-usa.com Mike Eagleshield or call (607) 336-1174 and record a message with your contact information.

Dan Wesson in 44 Magnum

I was at the range yesterday and met a guy with a Stainless Dan Wesson in .44 Magnum. He said it was an "old model". He liked the hell out of the gun. He said he replaced 3 629's with this one Dan Wesson. Dan Wesson has gone under several times, so I can not say what their quality is today.
