a freind at work has a dan wesson 44 mag revolver that hes asking $300 for its in excelent shape but it only has the aftermarket pachmyer grip and not the original its all stainless is it worth it . i dont know much about wheel guns and less about the big 44 but if its worth what hes asking id like to have it just to have yknow thanks for any info:D

Sounds like a very good price to me - don't know what a new D.Wesson would go for - but new S&W 44's go for well over $500 these days. If someone were to offer me a Smith or D.Wesson 44 for $300 in excellent shape I would buy it.

Make sure he has the barrel wrench and the feeler guage for it. If not, then deduct about $30.00 from the $300.00.

I had a Dan Wesson .22LR and my brother in law had one in .357Mag.
Fantastic guns. Strong and accurate as all get out. The big bore Dans "made their bones" in the silhouette shooters world, using heavy loads that would tear up anything short of a T/C contender.

Some would argue that the strength of the big Dans exceeds even the Ruger Redhawk, and is right up there with the Super Redhawk. I really wouldnt want to have to put money on it,,,,it's too close to call. If I REALLY was pushed into it,,, I think the Dan would still be shooting while the cast frame Ruger went to pieces,,,just MHO though.

For some reason though, the Dan Wesson never caught on except for a kind of niche gun. Pity. They really are top shelf guns.

$300.00 is about an average asking price for any Dan Wesson regardless of caliber with only 1 barrel/1 barrel shroud.

Dan Wesson has a website where you can get more info.

100% in agreement with RAE, particularly if it's a Monson Mass. manufacture.

Most Dans came through with decent triggers and actions. The feel of the action on a Dan is different than a Colt or S&W. It's very short as compared to the long pull. It may take some getting used to at first. If you have a 'smith work on the action, please check and make sure he has experience with the Dan Wesson first.
As for price, an excellent Model 744 usually brings $275 to $350 around here depending on the shop. If the barrel/cylinder gage is not included you can get by with a standard set of feelers. I set the gaps on mine at .003 as Daniel B. recommended. The barrel wrench, if not included will have to be ordered through Dan Wesson Arms. If you don't plan on changing barrels or shrouds you won't need it. Standard allen wrenches will work for sight adjustments and grip removal.
Check the nut that holds the barrel and shroud in place. Be sure the edges of the notches are not worn as this can make barrel removal a nightmare. From your description this is most likely not be a problem.
What's the barrel length and does it have a full length underlug on the shroud? Dan's with the full length underlug can get muzzle heavy in a hurry. No biggy, just get the 1/2 underlug shroud if you find that to be the case.
My 2 cents, grab it, not a steal, but your not being taken either.
Take Care
