dan wesson 357 mag stainless

i have recently come across a 357 dan wesson stainless 8" barrel serial #sd011xxx, i do not know anything about age or worth of gun. it is a 6 shot revolver. can anyone offer info?
 
awesome gun & cartridge... I own a Monson gun, ( 6" stainless 357 MAX ) but am not into them enough to remember where they were made by serial...

where was your gun made ??? & is it the change barrel style... ( has a slotted barrel nut at the muzzle end )
 
More than likely it is a 715-2 (7 being their stainless designator)

Back in the day, DWs sorta ruled the silhouette shooting world.

Look up EWK for more barrel shroud combos, or do some searching on the auction boards to see if you can find alternative barrel/shroud lengths (stainless might be a tough find tho)

Worth? Age? $450-600 depending on condition, age... 80s or 90s mfg but others will know more than I. I direct you to...

Slight correction. It might be interchangable barrel version. Many were but there were a few fixed barrel DWs.

Here's my 15-2 (non stainless) with the 6" Vent rib Heavy barrel. If yours is interchangable, then you might have one of several barrel shrouds.



The actual barrel is a tube inside the outer "shroud". They are very accurate, but a bit picky about primer hardness.

I keep looking at Dan Wesson's 357 with interchangeable barrels. It seems like a fun gun, almost like 4 in one. There are a few for sale in very good condition. They come with four barrels the tool and a nice case. The prices are right around $1500 - $1700. Do you think it's a fair price for such gun? Thanks.
 
For a complete, original kit, probably, depending on condition.

In all honesty I never used the interchangable barrel feature. It does make heavy-duty cleaning easier though as you can pull the whole thing down a couple of times a year & give it a birthday.
 
You would be hard pressed to find a production revolver made that can out perform dan wesson revolvers. 1500plus for a pistol pack is high unless a maxed out kit in a super mag from those that I have seen . 1000 dollars would be a strong price for very nice PP's. Single blued revolver s in good shape sell for 400 and SS models 500 to 600 it seems but certain super mags can go for 800+.

Just spend some time the danwessonforum in the arcives and history learning a bit more about each model. Monson Mass. made pistols tend to be a favorite for many of us.

I bought my first DW , a 15-2 357mag in 1976 and now have a 22lr, another 357 and a 44. I have passed on several find super mags in the last year for 800.
 
Thank you for very helpful information. I am a sucker for precised shooting and I've heard that it's hard to beat Dan Wesson in that department. But they are hard to come across.

Like most guns the DW's have a favorite load/bullet wt combo that works best. The 357 I used to have shot best with Bullseye and a 158gr cast bullet, don't remember the powder load, but it was a real tac driver. My Max likes H4227 and 200gr semi wadcutter gas check for best accuracy. So if your 1st round isn't the best, experiment with different powders and bullet combo's, or if you don't reload, just different brands and bullet wts.
 
I have a pistol pack with the 2, 4, 6, and 8 inch barrels. I'd have to say it's my favorite gun. I'll never get rid of it.
 
The stainless 357 mags are model 715, there isn't a 715-2 because unlike the blued model 15, there was never an older 'pork chop' version, so the 715 is technically still a '-1'. They say Dan Wesson himself was against making stainless guns and that none were produced during his lifetime.

Most Monson guns that were not pistol pac kits seem to have been sold with 6" barrels. 4" are the next most common. 2.5" are nearly as common as 4's, but are a bit more rare.

Around here a stainless 715 will fetch about $450. A blued 15-2 goes between $300 - $450 depending on if the seller is going by the book value, or the currently inflated market value. A pistol pac will go from $700 to $1500 for a model 15-2 depending on condition/completeness of the kit. I just bought a nearly complete pistol pac this week. It's missing the patch and belt buckle. These are great revolvers with some very revolutionary design elements. I have 6 Dan Wesson revolvers and they are my pride and joy.
 
The Monson guns were supposed to be better. All guns were marked where they were made. The other location was Palmer, Mass. Later guns were available with a fixed barrel.
