Damn I love this state!!

Several years ago I fled the Peoples Republic of New York to the new world of northern Idaho, best thing I ever did. I've owned various firearms all my life, and recently have decided to accept responsibility for my own safety, by carrying a handgun. I have applied for my CCW, which, at this time I have yet to receive. Anyway, we are an open carry state, yet I very rarely see anyone carrying. I went out today with my .45 on my hip and went about my business. I figured at the least I'd get some odd looks, if not questioned about it. Made it a point to wear some decent cloths, be polite and generally not draw attention. Also figured that if questioned I'd explain the local laws and reasons for carrying, maybe turn some people around. My reaction from the public was...Nothing. Not one strange look, comment, etc. I can relate to some of the posts on concealed carrying on how it makes you much more aware of anyone around you and the position of the gun. I intend to carry concealed as soon as I receive my permit, but it is really nice to have the freedom to carry open

Im understand the hunting and fishing are qiite goo, though some other facets of life might be missed. If you can survive the winters, which I understand are pretty bad, great.

Personally, I traveled a great deal, and had found over the years that most people, most of the time, respond amazingly well to "please" and "thank you". Some just want to be left alone, and that too is usually doable.

Alan, you're right the hunting and fishing is darn good-which is why I won't be posting much to TFL for the next week or 2. Elk season starts Tuesday. Can't think of anything I'm missing here yet (except the damn elk last year!). Actually winters are pretty mild, however I was born near Buffalo (talk about a birth defect), so everythings releative.

Hey, we also have open carry in California. Well, it needs to be unloaded. I wonder if I could dress nice and when asked by the LAPD about the gun on my hip, I can instruct them on how I am following the law because the gun is unloaded and I'm not carrying in a threating manner.

Hmm, that would work here except there were 2 step I left out.

1. Somehow I would need to figure out how to stand up with my hands cuffed behind my back.

2. I would need a couple minutes to catch my breath since there was a tac boot applying 30-40 lbs of pressure to my back for the past five minutes.

3. Then I could explain the law to the LAPD, CHP, and later, my lawyer......

You can open carry in WV, however they can nab you if someone complains on the grounds that you produced a threatening appearance ... talk about a load of bull. i live in the country and carry half way concealed. but OWB, it is just really uncomfortable to carry IWB when you work on a farm, ride a lawn mower, etc.
