CHICAGO -- A shooting in a park on the city's South Side left at least eight people wounded Sunday night, police said.

Two people were in critical condition and one was in serious condition. Other victims were in good or fair condition.

One person was in custody and another was being questioned, police spokesman Matthew Jackson said. The shooting occurred at about 8:15 p.m. near a basketball court in Jackson Park, Jackson said.

Witnesses said the park was crowded when the shooting broke out.

Police recovered at least two weapons, Jackson said, including a TEC-9 assault rifle (sic).[/quote]

It will be very interesting to see the "spin" the media put on this one when further details are released.

Let's see...hmmm....Chicago, oh yeah, isn't that one of those gun free cities?? Then obviously this couldn't have happened since guns are illegal and all.

This wasn't the only shooting over the weekend. There were quite a few on the news Saturday night too. Yep, all in Chicago where handguns are illegal, and whaddya know in all shootings a handgun was used! Laws work great let me tell ya ;) BTW, The park they are talking about is a not so nice neighborhood.

Saturday they caught two guys that shot a black man with a handgun (hate crime), now I understand that they search the criminals home but in the report they had said "A 12 Ga shotgun, handguns, and a few rifles were found in the home of one of the criminals" First of all the shotguns and rifles are legal, yes the handguns are illegal. I understand they took the guns because of the crime, but did you ever notice they always act like someone has an aresenal stocked up? I think alot of people own more than one gun but the way they report it, it makes it sound so awful. If someone owns a gun there is a good chance they own a few guns, thats like reporting "Well we found three cans of hairspray next to a lighter, a 2 gallon container of gasoline, and a box of matches". The other guns the guy had weren't illegal (well maybe now that he committed a crime but not before that). See how the media twists one evil thing into a major evil thing?

You nailed that one HD! Ever notice that is where most shootings occur? There or the projects. I am on the NWST side and to be honest I can't remember a shooting happening out here...ever. Then again Daley is 'cleaning up' downtown so a few more years they will be pushed out this way. Also note that most Police and Fireman live on the NWST side and not the "Souf side" .

Be careful how you say "another shooting in a gun free state" because their reply will be the guns are coming from gun friendly states like mine.
The latest spins I've heard are that the states that are against guns can't be effective if the BG can drive down to Georgia, buy a gun, and bring it back. What's the fix? Make new guns laws for states like Georgia of course.

The fact is the reason guns are purchased illegally and then used in Chicago or NY is because crimminals don't get punished in these states. If they do it's minimal and they are back on the street killing in no time.

You can't legally buy a gun from a gun friendly state unless your from that state and undergo a backgound check. Anything else is an illegal sale and should be delt with harshly.

FIrst point: If "easy" gun availability in OTHER states is the cause of violence in Chicago, why don't the "other" states have higher rates of gun violence? Maybe demographics have something to do with it? What makes guns become killing machines not where they're easily sold, but only after transport to Chicago?

Second point: As far as criminals and victims are concerned, Chicago completed a 20-year evaluation of murderers and their victims a few years back. The bad news was that around three quarters of the killers had prior criminal records, indicating a failure of the criminal justice system. The good news is, two thirds of the "victims" ALSO had a criminal history, putting the majority of the murders into the "good riddance" category. You don't hear much about the study, since they also broke down both categories demographically, and for at least a few years, non-Hispanic Caucasians committed less than 10 percent of the murders.

I'm far from a conspiracy nut, but why is it that whenever our glorious leaders get into trouble there always seems to be a mass shooting? Seems that the sleepers awaken at just the right time.

So many pistols, so little money.

Yep, the guns probably were sold in the suburbs, where crime is rampant because of the lack of gun control laws.

Idiots.

Don you are probably right, although I am not sure if they bought the handguns in the burbs, I am guessing the handguns are black market. Des Plaines had 1 murder last year as opposed to Chicago where handguns are illegal, they have 100 something already. That should tell you something right there. We also don't have big projects around here, and most of the crime is near the apt complexes, they pack people in like sardines which equals more crimes. Oh thats right Ryan is our Gov. I could obtain a truckers liscense no problem but not a handgun :D

Here is an update, they are looking into it to see if it is gang related (of course it is!)

CHICAGO (AP) - Eight people were shot and wounded in a South Side park, and three people were arrested. The shooting broke out around 8:15 p.m. Sunday near a basketball court in Jackson Park. Witnesses said the park was crowded with families. While three people were in custody, no formal charges had been filed as of Monday morning, said a police spokeswoman. The incident was under control about 20 minutes after police arrived, according to police spokesman Matthew Jackson. They were trying to determine if the shooting was gang related. One person, a 24-year-old man, was in critical condition Monday morning at Cook County Hospital, and a second person was in serious condition at another hospital. Two others were in fair condition, including an 18-year-old pregnant woman who was shot in the chest. Her baby was not hurt, said a Northwestern Memorial Hospital spokeswoman.

Great points Hardball and Miss D.

Why are there no more crimes where the guns are so accessable? Such as Georgia where these people supposedly buy the guns, and outside of Chicago as well? Seems that the guns just get all violent once they enter Chicago (guns become violent all by themselves, which explains "gun violence").

I think that most people deep down know that most murders and crimes are commited between criminals, and that non-whites compose most of this type of behavior. The stats speak for themselves. But, it is so un-PC to say that, or even THINK it, that no one will admit it, even though it is a FACT. If you are not engaging in criminal behavior, then you are very very likely to never be victim of such violence. If you live a law-abiding life style and don't hang around violent criminals, your odds of being murdered in America are infinitesimally low.

I wouldn't care if there were a hundred shootings a day. Doesn't change the fact that if they try to take them I will be shooting back!
