Picked up a new daewoo DP 51 today. I must say for $275.00 this gun is quite impressive. Range session coming soon, gun feature's a unique triple action trigger which is quite smooth in all modes. I believe this gun is based on a smith 5900 series. Fit and finish are certainly comparable too any number of $500.00 handguns I've seen. If it holds up It will be quite the bargain.
$275.00 was the out the door price/ HELLO!

I've had a DP-51 for years. It's a very reliable pistol, but the accuracy isn't up to my other 9mm pistols. My BHP and Glock are considerably more accurate, at least in my hands.

Reliability has been good.
Accuracy average...precision (of sights) very poor. Mine shoots a good 5" high at 10 yards.

Fit and finish good. Feel is very good (I've always liked the feel of an all-metal pistol). Looks, very good. Trigger is good, but my skin of my finger sometimes gets pinched between the back of the trigger and the back of the trigger-guard.

Takedown for cleaning is fairly straight-forward...reassembly can be a little tricky, with possible damage to a part if you aren't careful.

Overall, a good value.

I dont think I would trust Daewoo. My ex had a Daewoo TV (and it was junk) and there is a Daewoo car dealer down the street. That would be like Handa making a gun and I would trust a Honda gun over a Daewoo.

I was looking at these at a show last week, seems like a solid well made gun at a good price. I know the Daewoo 5.56 rifles have a good reputation.

In point of fact, Daewoo has been making quality firearms for quite a while. I don't know how you can transfer one experience with a TV to categorize the reliability or serviceability of the service pistol of the South Korean armed forces! Other than mine isn't the most accurate 9mm on the planet, I'd have a hard time finding fault with it. It's been 100% reliable, right out of the box. I don't shoot it much anymore, having moved on to other guns, but that doesn't detract from it's quality. When you factor in the low price, it's probably a very good value for a 9mm service handgun.

GE makes toasters, but I don't worry about flying in an airplane that has GE engines. That's at least as valid a comparison as the one between TV's and handguns. :)

I bought one some years back when they were still supported for parts -- KBI if I remember right. Finish was a bit rough but not bad, accuracy was good for me, but sold it because it was not supported for parts anymore.

The only Daewoo that I've ever used was a 9mm knockoff of some S&W model. Accuracy was not that good, precision okay, fit and finish definitely left something to be desired, and reliability was horrible. Tried three different ammo variants with no success. Not only did it stovepipe, but how many times can the trigger go click with no fire? *Maybe* I was holding a lemon that time, but I will never pick up another Daewoo. Bottom line is that I am not a big fan of cheap imitations when it comes to firearms.

I don't know which Daewoo pistol you had, but it sure doesn't sound like the DP-51. The fit and finish on mine was excellent, certainly the equal of the typical S&W. The reliability was also outstanding, it never failed to chamber and fire. My major complaint was that accuracy wasn't top shelf, though certainly more than sufficient for a service pistol. There had to be something seriously wrong with the pistol you are talking about, but I really doubt that's normal for the Daewoo.

Daewoo DP-51

When I was in Korea for a few years, I spent quite a bit of time with ROK Army officers.

Daewoo DP-51, K-2 rifle and K-1 carbine are outstanding firearms. If I had my pick, I'd rather pack a DP-51 and a K-2 over M9 and M16A2 anyday!

DP-51 is considerably lighter and handier than the Beretta M9. While it may be slightly less accurate than the Beretta, it has a much better trigger and that makes it easier for me shoot accurately in practice. Its reliability is an equal of the Beretta.

As for the K-2... Well, I don't even have to go there. Anyone who has ever shot one knows that it is more rugged, reliable and accurate than a M16A2 - it combines the best elements of the AKM, M16 and the FAL. Simply an oustanding weapon!
