ok , so I am looking at this rifle as my SHTF weapon , I live in africa so thanks to the chinese and the russians the 7.62 ammo will not be a problem.
Being the very careful person I am I just want to make very sure about this rifle , anybody who has any negative comment about it better speak out now or forever hold your peace :D

If you are looking at the new manufactered milled reciever CZ built rifle... I love mine... though it's probably not more accurate than my accurized SKS, but still a very nice rifle.... buy a couple mags, as nothing else similar fits

The VZ 58 is one of the best assault rifles ever made. Milled receiver and lightweight, a rare combination.

ok scrap this thread

ok I no longer need to know about this rifle since it seems I can't have im imported anymore
hagar daar in afrika waar meeste mense afrikaans praat

well I have the option of this little gun http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums...on-Micro-Galil

a SAR m14 , looks a lot like the AK but how much the same it really is I don't know.
Then there is a Norinco AR 15 , and another made by a czechoslovakian company simply stamping VAR on their product. The VAR one seems a much better quality than the norinco. but I like the SAR m 14 because it is more compact .

and all will be in 5,56 because it also seems 7.62 is a no no here at this moment in time

this is just my personal opinion but it would be a bad idea. dont get me wrong, the VZ 58 is a very nice rifle but they took everything that people love about the AK47 and removed all of the interchangeability. the VZ 58 has also be discontinued so it is going to be a very short period of time where you'll be able to get replacement parts for it. you may just be better off getting an AK47 and then you'll have easily availible ammo and parts

Can you provide a reference to this? I just ordered a VZ.58, but haven't paid for it yet. I'm maybe 2 days away from doing so.

The VZ58 is still in service and looks to be so for some time to come. Czechpoint USA is building them as we speak using CZ surplus parts with a US milled receiver. The only downside to the rifle is the magazine. It is proprietary and the AK mags won't work. I've been shooting mine now for a few years and have been totally pleased with the weapon. Not one failure to report and it is the lightest battle rifle I own. They are not going away for some time to come. The Czechs have built a lot of the rifles since 1958 so parts and guns are plentiful and battle tested. Buy with confidence and enjoy if they are legal where you live. By the way, the Israelis have designed some really nice aftermarket parts for the weapon. Zahal, http://www.zahal.org/groups/shop-tactical-gear, is the way to go for some quality upgrades to the furniture.

The Czechs and Slovaks are working on fielding replacements for the 58, but predicting a pending disappearance of replacement parts is overly pessimistic -- A) there's a mountain of existing parts, and B) the market is such that when the surplus parts supply eventually goes away, someone will step in an support the product. It's not like the M1A went belly up as soon as Springfield Armory burned through the supply of USGI surplus parts.

I'd honestly say a much bigger concern here in the US would be an import ban on parts coming in than the supply drying up. (Not trying to derail the thread into gun ban discussions, but it simply seems a much more likely scenario for problems supporting the 58 or other foreign made designs.)

the CZUSA website lists both the VZ58 military sporter and the VZ 58 tactical sporter as discontinued in 2010. you may want to read into things before you instantly start flaming someone. all of this is moot anyway since the OP has even said that he cant get one in africa.

Hokay, just to clear some things up - yes, the vz-58 is still in service with the Czech Army, and is being phased out for the CZ 805 select fire rifle.

Yes, Czechpoint is importing vz-58s, but they are made with a Czech receiver, made by Czech Small Arms, formerly known as D-Technik, in the Czech republic. They come in with a magwell for single stack mags, and are CNC'd to accept the standard 30 round mag here in the US, outfitted with compliance parts.
Yes, 30 round mags are available from Czechpoint, for as low as $15 a pop. http://www.czechpoint-usa.com/produ...magazine-with-us-made-parts-complete-surplus/ They aren't in any danger of running out, since they've been making mags for this thing since 1958.
CZ-USA was selling the Czechpoint rifles, a business arrangement that ended some time ago. CZ-UB still offers the real and original vz-58 to international customers...
http://www.czub.cz/en/catalog/86-law-enforcement-military/OS-AUT/SA_58.aspx
...but that is the select fire version only, not a semi-auto only clone for US use. I can only hope they will make an 805 clone for US distribution...
The vz-58 took everything about the AK and made it better. :P Lighter, more accurate, durable and easy to use. My opinion, based on real world experience with both rifles.
Having said ALL of that, I hope the OP is able to find something that is available and legal in his neck of the woods - one would think FALs and AKs would be everywhere.
