CZ75 questions for you guys

OK, here goes

1) How "dangerous" is it to carry a CZ-75 (non B) model without the firing pin safety? Is this a major safety concearn or no big deal? I always carry chambered IWB or fanny pack. I would probably carry the 75 in double action mode instead of cocked and locked, unless you think thats a unsafe practice.

2) I am seeing a million different prices out there on CZs. The model I am thinking about buying is a CZ75 (non B) with 2 factory 15rd mags, and one factory 10 round mag. This gun was bought before the fall of the commmies, so the guy selling it paid way to much for it. I think I can get it for around $400. The finish looks much better than the guns I have seen locally and at gun shows.

3) I know that the 75s have a smoother trigger due to the lack of firing pin safety. Do these older guns have any premium value over the 75Bs that I can go buy at joe smoes gun shop for $350?

I assume that you are talking about a CZ75 Single action. The newer ones have a firing pin safety block. Take a look at the one you are interested in. Remove the slide and see if it has one.
I have a CZ75 BD (Decocker) and it has a very smooth trigger despite having a firing pin safety block.

You have a Pre-B model which is double/single action given your description. A friend picked one up about 2 months ago and paid $349.00 for his and it was brand new - had set in a collectors safe for several years.

As for premium value, it depends on the buyer.

Personally, I like both versions pre b and current.

I have one of the pre-b model CZ-75's and I don't think it's completely safe to carry hammer down on a live round. The hammer can move forward while in this state, so theoretically it could AD if you bumped something. I'd carry it cocked and locked.

From a looks standpoint, I prefer the pre-B model. $400 seems a little bit high, unless it's a very early model. $360 sounds better.

Guess it depends on where you live.

I saw a 1986 CZ 75 at the gun show yesterday. Fairly nice condition with a worn box... $519. John

Pose your question at CZforum.com. They have a CZ classics section. Stephen Camp is one of the mods there and he has several pre Bs. Get his attention and he will provide worlds of info.

Hello, Opie-IN.

The pre-B CZ75 has an inertial firing pin, i.e.: it is shorter than the the channel it travels in and when the hammer is in the down position against it, the pin does NOT touch the primer. A smack on the hammer will not drive the pin forward; the hammer has to strike the pin when the pin's protruding from the retaining plate. Like all semis without internal firing pin safeties, it IS possible (if one works at it) to get one to fire by dropping it from several feet onto a hard surface such that it hits on the muzzle. The gun stops abruptly and the pin continues to move, being retarded only by the spring. Several handgun makers specializing in 1911s offer their pistols without internal firing pin safeties. In short, the Pre-B CZ75 is safe to carry with a chambered round and the hammer down for a DA first shot.

As others have mentioned, you can find Pre-B pistols for less than the price you mention, but that might should be balanced against the finding of these guns that are getting a bit harder to find over time. Were I in the market for a Pre-B, I might very well be willing to pay the $400 to get a clean, well maintained pistol rather than having to take the chance that the next one I find cheaper was not in as good of condition...if I could find one at all.

Let us know what you decide.

Best.

1) Stephen A. Camp is correct. If your hammer is the "down" position the gun can only fire if is dropped from at least 6 YARDS muzzle first, or if you hit it with ...a hammer! I carry hammer down, and the only concern is lowering the hammer on a live round, you have to be very careful and point it in a safe direction.
2) Don't know.
3) I have a pre-B and I love it, but I don't think the passive firing pin safety in the new ones adds any perceptible drag or weight to the trigger pull. FWIW, mine does not have a stellar trigger, and I have seen CZ 75-Bs with better ones.
