cz vs. Remington/Winchester

I know they all make good rifles. I found the prices for CZ are very affordable and attractive. I am wondering if it is really worth getting Rem or Win.

I bought the CZ 550 and am very satisfied. Have owned both Win 70s and Rem 700s and I like the CZ better. HTH

Vince,

I sold a Remington 700 VLS to buy a CZ 527 American. The 700 was sub-MOA out of the box. The CZ shoots about an inch, both with factory ammo. The Remington was a great paper puncher from the bench, but was a bear to haul around in the field. The CZ is light, fast handling, has a detachable magazine, and is accurate enough--and would probably be more accurate with better ammo or handloads. Two quirks with the CZ; requires special rings (came with the gun) that are a bit higher than I'd like, and the safety is reversed from the Remington (rear to fire, forward to safe). No big deal on either count. I have no regrets on the deal.

FWIW, CZ (Brno) rifles are very highly regarded here (Western Australia) as desirable "out-of-the-box" shooters in terms of accuracy and reliability and value for money.

Remington ditto, especially for the action which is commonly used for target rifles.

Winchester, for some reason, was never really seen as much more than a "so-so" hunting rifle here.

I have been shooting and hunting with rifles all my life and I highly recommend the controlled feed Winchesters. AS a matter of fact I own both old and new models. I think the new ones are the best yet.

The Winchester has a 3 position safety that alows you to safely unload the rifle.

The Controlled feed mechanism will prevent you from jamming up the rifle if you short stroke the action.

The Model 70 feeds rounds much more reliably than some of the puch feed guns.

The Model 70 extractor even in the older push feed models is very strong and it goes without saying how very strong the controlled feed model extractor is.

The Model 70 trigger is perhaps one of the most reliable triggers ever made. Take a look at its construction. It is one of the open face type triggers that allow dirt and grit to fall away from the mechanism. Contrast this to the troublesome enclosed box like tirggers of other models that trap dirt and moisture and often put the gun out of action in extremely rough circumstances.

The only gun that is better in terms of reliabilty would be the orginal 98 mauser rifle because of its more force full firing pin stroke but it comes with a price that also gives it a much slower lock time but if you are out in the extreme cold the 98 beats most of the more modern rifles.

The gas escape system of the 98 mauser is also perhaps the best in the world and it protects you far better than most of the modern rifles. The exceptions being the Savage 110 and the Weatherby which also have very good gas escape systems in the event of a ruptured cartridge case.

I personally would go with the Winchester they are priced right. If price is no object I would have a custom 98 mauser built by a top notch smith. Ever look at what gun the rich people always use when they have a custom gun built. You guessed it either a 98 mauser or a model 70- Winchester. I think that alone says it all. Most rich people did not get rich by being stupid. They are well informed about everything including which rifle is the best to customize and use. W.R.

WR, you must deal with smarter rich people than I do. The Viper that gets up to 6,000 RPM as they park is usually my first hint I'm not going to be surprised.

Not to criticize the 98 or its clones, as Winchester does make nearly as good a gun as CZ in several respects, provided they can remember to do the controlled feed version.
