CZ SP01 tactical

Been eyeballing one of these but can't seem to find one anywhere in my area.
Would like some feedback from current owners.

Recently had the same trouble as you. Had to go a whole county over to Buds Gun Shop in Sevierville to find one. Your best bet would probably be to buy online, kygunco.com and hinterlandoutfitters.com should have them in stock.

I owned the 9mm SP-01 Tactical for about a year before I had to sell it when I had a health emergency pop up. Over a year ago I bought it's brother, the manual safety version SP-01 and have had it ever since. I'm a huge fan of the SP-01 series, even over the CZ-75. To me it's the natural evolution of the design.

The Tactical, out of the box, will do anything in the HD role you ask of a steel handgun. It is a extremely stable, 'shootable' gun platform. Being a 75 variant, the SP-01 in either configuration lends itself to tinkering and 'hot rodding' with aftermarket parts and gunsmithing. You don't have to do this by any means, but it's very tempting since some of the parts upgrades are easy to install yourself. The Tactical comes over sprung from the factory for full power duty ammunition. Changing the recoil spring and mainspring to something lighter will make the gun easier to rack, and lower the DA pull weight. It was a easy change, so on both my Tactical and standard SP-01 I installed Cajun Gun Works extended firing pin, lightened mainspring kit, and a lighter recoil spring. Made two already great guns even better. The extended 18rd mags of the SP-01 actually use the same size mag spring as the standard 75 flush mags. To ensure reliability in a HD gun I changed the springs out for Wolf +10 extra power mag springs. I'm a fan of extra power Wolf mag springs in all my CZ mags.

All in all, I'd DEFINITELY recommend buying a SP-01 Tactical!

depending on how you grip a pistol, you may need to put your hands on one first to try it out...before deciding if the decocker version is for you.

I have a very high-ride grip, where my thumb settles is directly on top of the decocking lever. During high speed, multiple target engagements, there was some pressing of the lever...not enough to decock it, but only because I realized it and eased up tension on my thumb. I found this to be a liability for me, as in a high stress situation, I may inadvertently decock the pistol. Because of that, I've never added a Tactical or Phantom to my collection, and I stay with my conventional saftied SP01.

However, the new P07/P09 line of pistols re-engineered the lever style/position and I do not have that issue. I keep my EDC P07 with the decocker levers installed.

Just some food for thought, before making your final decision.

I have the SP01 standard model with the safety, I hate decockers. I've only had one 100 round session with it so far but I absolutely love it. I've never been so accurate my first trip out with any other pistol.

The thing that will really floor you your first time shooting an SP01 is how little recoil or muzzle flip their is, at least for the 9mm version, I can't speak for the .40SW. I believe this is due to the relatively low slide weight and heavy frame. It absolutely soaks up recoil, making it very hard to resist the urge to do magazine dumps :D

My only complaint is the reset is a tad long, but I plan on fixing that with a $66 kit from Cajun Gun Works. Even if I never did I would still love it.

Definitely recommend buying one if you have the opportunity.

I ordered two of my CZs from Damascus Gun Shop. Great service. They have a .40 Tactical in stock now: http://www.damascusgunshop.com/SP-01-s/109.htm.

CZs seem to come into the country in small lots a few times per year, and many sell out quickly. You're probably best off monitoring a few online shops religiously until another rowboat manned by Czech elves lands on the East Coast and unloads its cargo of precious guns. The wait, after you've made up your mind to buy, can feel unbearable, but that wait is worth it.

Unless you plan to competitively shoot, don't be shy about getting a safety-equipped P-01. If you want to carry Condition 2, decocking to the half-cock, as recommended, is easy and safe.

Haven't tried the CZ SP-01 Tactical, but have run over 1,000 rounds thru a CZ75 Tactical Sport; an incredible handgun. Also, have fired 500 plus round thru a CZ75 SP-01 Shadow Target II, another great gun. Would expect the CZ SP-01 to be outstanding.

I have three CZ's. The CZ 75 SP-01 TAC is the last one I bought last year. A very accurate gun. I changed the grips on this one.

Thanks for the feedback. Got to handle one yesterday at a local gun shop and it fit my hand well. Unfortunately it was in 40S&W and the price seemed a bit high at $747. Is that true or is that the going rate?

Got mine at Buds physical store in Sevierville TN, $619.99, $690 after tax and background. It was a little steep IMO but no one else had it locally and I had cash in hand after selling some reloading components I didn't need.

If you want the 9mm I would definitely hold out for it. Kygunco is out of both the tactical and safety model at the moment but they usually get them back in stock pretty quickly.

Wait for it

I have been tracking the sp-01 because I cannot hep but to want it, I have encountered spotty opportunities to purchase even with the resources of the greater inter web. I was lucky to walk into a p-06 early, before CZs became as popular as they are today. It is still my go to gun with night sights and I like the decocker, fun to shoot, but it wears big .40 cal jagged holes in the center of targets too quickly:D.

Use slickguns.com or the like.

I'll say it: CZs just aren't popular in the US. They are always available at the same online stores but are rarely carried in stores. List for sale any other brand and you will get calls. List a CZ and the herd is much smaller.

I'd love to try one in .40

But I noticed there have been a LOT of threads lately about minor problems with Sp01s,

Failures to feed, failures to eject/extract. Most of these had only happened once or worked themselves out. They may have been break in malfunctions or just faulty ammo or excess grease or grime stopping things up. I trust CZ and would go for one, especially for the money and what you get. If I was a slightly wealthier man I would own a CZ 75 or SP01 in .40

Two pistols is all I can keep/afford, and I'm sticking with the ones I've got

P71Pilot,

There is no issue with grease or break in. The issue is CZ's are sprung for standard spec NATO 9mm ammo. The .40's are sprung the same, i.e for full power/pressure.

Problem is most of the cheaper bulk ammo in the USA is "target" grade, with a correspondingly lower operating pressure.

The issue is easily solved with the correct weight recoil spring.

schmeky is right, the SP-01's are 'over-sprung' for full power 124gr duty ammo. They come with a pretty stout 18lb recoil spring I believe, and a heavy mainspring as well. Not ideal for running light 115gr Winchester White Box target loads.

A lot of guys who use them for competition, or strictly range use, have the entire gun re-sprung with lighter aftermarket springs. You wouldn't want to do that with on a SP-01 that you might use for HD or carry though, sense you would be shooting full power defensive ammo. Cajun Gun Works will tell you in their parts package descriptions which springs are intended for competition, or defensive use, so you pick the right one for your intended role and ammo choice.
