CZ Questions

I've been looking around at (and shooting) quite a few different models of handguns While contemplating my first handgun purchase, and I've been hearing good things about CZ's. While I'm pretty knowlegeable on most modern firearms, I know next to nothing about CZ's. I've looked around a bit, and all that I've really been able to find out is that they are pretty inexpensive and generally well regarded. What I'd like to know is how they stack up against the other handguns I've been looking at (1911, HP, Sig, HK, Walther P99 etc.), and what models are the best to have. Also, how hard is it to find standard capacity mags, and do they cost an arm and a leg? Concealment is not an issue as this weapon will be purchased for home defence. Like I said, I know very little about CZ's, and I'm wondering which is most desireable, 75, 95 etc. I'm going to purchase a handgun soon, and I'd hate to learn that I spent $600 on a gun that I wont like as much as a CZ that cost half as much. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I'm primarily looking for a 9mm if it makes a difference. Thanks.

They generally shoot as well as pistols much higher in price. The model (s) that I would recommend are:

CZ 97B (one of the most accurate stock .45's out there)
CZ 75B (both 9mm and .40 versions are well made and very accurate)

I'll let the other folks answer the remaining of your questions.

Also, is the CZ100 any good? They look nice, but I don't hear much about them.

Its just ok. I've never been impressed with the CZ100, as its accuracy and reliability IME don't come close to the other CZ models. If it was me, I'd pass on the CZ 100. Its nothing special. ;)

You might want to try www.czforum.com. They'll be alot of good info there. I was a huge Beretta fan for years until I discovered the fine line of CZ pistols. They are absolutely the best value in the market today.
Great value, more accurate than any Beretta I ever owned, stone cold reliable, very durable with their polymer finish, and damn handsome to boot. CZ's are great pistols IMO. Good Luck, J. Parker

>> What I'd like to know is how they stack up against the other handguns I've been looking at (1911, HP, Sig, HK, Walther P99 etc.),

The 75B is a large, all-steel service pistol, which makes it like the M1911, HP, and Beretta 92.
The SIG 22x series has an alloy frame and is lighter. The Walther P99 is lighter and smaller. Light isn't necessarily good for a range gun that you want to shoot a lot.

The CZ 75 is a classic, here are some reviews:

and you'll find an article rating the CZ74 the "most underrated" auto pistol of the 20th century.

This is nonsense, of course. The M1911 was little used outside the US. The Browning Hi Power was used world-wide for more than 50 years.

The CZ is a good bang-for-the-buck pistol. It's a little rough inside and most have a polymer finish that is durable but not beautiful in the fashion of an old Colt blue. But they're accurate, reliable, and durable. 10 round mags are $15-20 and high cap mags are $35-50, for factory or Mec-Gar.

Well, they are very good if not great guns. For comparisons sake
you can compare them to Beretta, Sig and other "world" class guns. They make many different sizes, styles and calibers. The 75 model is the company flagship and offers the most options or choices for you. All models are dependable, accurate, comfortable and well built. Hi Cap mag are available and reasonable....both CZ and MecGar are common for under 45 $.

The "most underrated pistol of the 20th century" articles I have read regarding the 75 series, just refer to how the gun has been common and proven around the world for years. Having just become more popular in the states, many people tend to underrate the gun as they dont know it that well or the Company that made them. 1911's have been around forever and have a famous platform here in the states...the 75 is a relatively new gun here. It is also one of the top 3 guns copied thru out the world....1911's, HP's and the CZ 75's.

I also see them on "top ten guns of the century" lists more often than not, with lots and lots of writers both prof. and amatuer.

Check out the CZForum....they can help you if you have specific questions......Shoot well

Rogue, the CZ polymer (black coated) finish is a wonderful care-free coating for the gun. Don't ignore that aspect. Blued guns require care and wiping with an oiled rag every time you touch them.

Many CZ pistols also come in satin nickel finish, another care-free finish.

If you are left-handed, the CZ75B in 9mm has a brother: the CZ85B with both safety and slide release controls on both sides. In smaller caliber, the CZ83 has RH and LH safety and magazine release (RH slide release only).

Both the CZ85B and the CZ83 are very well balanced pistols which hel in accurate and comfortable shooting. I have not handled any of their other models.

The 75B is a large, all-steel service pistol, which makes it like the M1911, HP, and Beretta 92.
The SIG 22x series has an alloy frame and is lighter.

Actually, the Beretta 92 has an ALLOY frame. ;)

cz-75's

I have the CZ-75 PCR (a compact alloy framed version with decocker).

It is a well designed gun that is comfortable, easy to shoot and accurate. To me, it is more comfortable to shoot than a UPS9c - which makes it a great bargain.

If you enjoy shooting, just for the pleasure of shooting, and don't plan on carrying, I think the CZ-75SA is just about the best deal out there. It is a heavy gun with low bore axis and a good single action trigger - low recoil, excellent accuracy and great ergonomics. Kind of like a stronger Browning HiPower with an improved frame/slide design, and an affordable price tag. But unlike the BHP, it doesn't have a reputation for biting the hand that feeds it.
Plus, it takes a .22 conversion kit that turns it into a high quality .22 pistol.

Some folks really love the CZ-85, but they aren't available in Ca, so I can't comment on them.

You might want to try the "search" function on this forum, there have been a ton of topics on CZ pistols. I know because I posted on alot of them. :D

To summarize:

CZ= really good

15 round magzines are plentiful and not too expensive

IMHO functionally comparable to Beretta 92, BHP or SigSauer P-series... I've fired all 3 and like the CZ-75B best.

Thanks for all the help. I checked out the CZ forum and learned quite a bit. I'll have to see about shooting one soon. It looks like the Cz75 or 85 in satin nic. might be my first handgun. I have one more question, which models are SA, and which are DA/SA? Thanks again for all the help.

It is for the money IMO the best 9mm on the market. Mags are plentiful and the gun has a proven track record with being used all over the world.
It will shoot on the same level as Glocks, Sigs, H&K and Beretta, and be just as reliable.
For under $400 you can get a CZ w/2 mags (usually one is a hi-cap), another mag, and uncle mikes holster/mag pouch and be just as well armed as with any of the other guns mentioned.

I have owned one and really liked it and would get another in a heart beat.

Check out the CZ-85 Combat instead of the 75: for about $30 more, you get adjustable sights and a better trigger. I love mine.:p

The gun doesnt use the 75/85 mags...you can use witness 45 10 rnd'rs from MecGar, CDNN has them and other places...I believe the gun was built around the 10 rnd capacity.
Shoot well

i gotta jump in on this. imo, the cz 75b sa is the most accurate 9mm out of the box iv'e ever had, and iv'e been shooting hp's for years. also had a 75b in .40, was not impressed. recently picked up a cz 40b, which is very promising. it looks like a little 1911, which is no surprise as it was designed by colt, and a few, about 500, were maketed as colt z 40's. this was a single action only pistol, while the current cz 40b is da sa. like to find one of those z40's........................

kdub,

Saw a nice Colt Z40 at a gun show last weekend. For the price, you could pick up 5 or so CZ 40s. :(
