CZ Question

I like a manual safety and decocker, such as my Walther PPK/S has, or a Beretta 92. (I also like the grip/frame/firing pin safety of the 1911, which I have, so this isn't one of those comparison questions). I don't feel comfortable (yet) with pistols such as the Glock or Sig, with no external safety other than training.

I'm looking for a fairly compact 9mm with a manual safety and decocker. Do any of the CZ's fit the bill? I found their website, but can't tell from it, and it's a long way to any place that carries them.

Any other guns, including Berettas other than the 92, fit the bill?

Thanks.

As far as I know no CZ pistol has any external safety other than the option of carrying cocked and locked (Models CZ-75B and CZ-85B). The model CZ75-BD has a decocker but not an external safety.
The Taurus PT-92 gives you the option of an external safety, locked and cocked carrying if desired, and a decocker, all in one.

Look at the IMI/UZI-Baby Eagle. It gives you the benefit if a decocker and though it is slide mounted, it is unobtrusive. Great durable gun that can be thrown in the mud and shot with +P ammo with no ill effects.

Any CZ-75 with a 'D' suffix sports a decocker.

Here's a better CZ page (manufacturer's page) that lists quite a few that I've never seen/heard of, like the CZ-75D (compact alloy frame with decocker):

If you're feeling adventurous, you can remove the hammer on a standard CZ-75 and file down the hump between the hammer face and the half-cock notch. This will allow you to apply the safety when the hammer is forward. If you're wondering, the reason I know this is that I had an EAA Witness hammer installed on my CZ-75 at one time and that hammer lacked the hump. A smith should be able to do it for a small fee.

Like Destructo6 said, all D models sport a decocker. There's also the CZ75 PCR, a compact with alloy frame, decocker and night sights. It's not on the CZ USA page yet, but you can see some decocker versions at www.cz-usa.com/cz75.html To gte a better idea chck out the CZ75 D at www.czub.cz/PISTOLA.HTM

Make sure you fire the decocker version before buying. I tried one out and the decocker made it very uncomfortable.

Unfortunately none of these pistols offer a manual safety. Once you decock the pistols are ready to fire. The IMI and Tanfoglio pistols do offer a manual safety. IMI pistols can be had for very good prices right now. I've mostly seen full size pistols. I've yet to see a compact version. If you hold out you might want to take a hard look at the Beretta 9000 when it hits the market http://greent.com/beretta/

The cz 75 pcr compact has a de-cocking lever
and a firing pin block safety.(not sure how
this works) But overall this looks like a
fine gun, never fired one but dont understand
how the de-cocker would cause it to be
uncomfortable to shoot.?

What about a USP Compact in 9mm? Has a manual safety and decocking lever. Can be carried in DA or cocked and locked. It's not as small as some of the others mentioned, however.

I shoud've been clearer. The decocker for me is difficult to manipulate without changing my grip completely. Unlike a SIG Sauer's P Series which I can operate without modifying my grip.

The USP is a very good suggestion. If you can find a USED one I recommend a SW 6906 (12 rounds with prebans) or 3913 (eight rounds). I wouldn't buy a new SW because of the deal they made with HUD.

My CZ-75 has no decocker [except a careful thumb] and then double-action first shot from hammer down, or cocked and safety 'on'... if you prefer. Both are safe.

The trouble with decockers and extended safeties etc on this superb but smaller framed CZ pistol is that people with big hands can foul the levers.
One of our beefy club members can switch the safety to "off" on the new CZ-75 IPSC heavy barrel model($1,650AUD here)with two big trendy extended safeties.... just by giving it his usual bear-squeeze !!

Its OK for me though, even though I have the smaller standard version of CZ-75 (*for smaller standard hands?), which is far lighter and more of a service pistol in my view.

The CZ is under-rated here and the US but still quality and is well made and a good performer
