I'm thinking of getting a cz model 83, just a gun for packpacking and such. Any thoughts or links on quality would be great. Thanks.

If I remember right, the CZ83 is chambered for .380ACP. You would be better off with a Makarov. The 9mmMak is a more potent round, and the gun will be more inexpensive to buy. Also, the Mak is thinner, making it easier to tote around. CZ's are good guns though. The 83 is just a tad big for the caliber IMHO.

Here is one of my Makarovs for comparison.

The CZ-83 can be had in .380 acp AND also in 9mm Makarov.

They're great guns, much more pleasant to shoot than the Makarovs but, unhappily cost about twice as much -- or more.

As Denfoote suggested, get a Makarov, and spend the difference on ammo.

(The Bulgarian Maks are very inexpensive and great guns; the East German versions cost more, but are marvelous handguns.)

denfoote,

The CZ 83 comes in 3 calibers: .380 (9 Browning), 9mm Mak and .32 (7.65 Browning). Very accurate, like the EG Mak I already own. I bought the .380 and got it to the range yesterday for the first time. Well satisfied with my choice.
