CZ P-09: Home Defense?

Hey guys. I've been on the lookout for a good long while now for a dedicated home defense nightstand gun. I am looking for a full-size 9x19mm that is a double-action single-action (DA/SA) as opposed to a single action only gun or striker fired variant. Not only am I used to DA triggers since I used to shoot revolvers quite a bit, so don't mind the first DA pull, I like to keep the gun outside in the open on the nightstand and with a round in the chamber. Striker-fired guns don't make me feel too comfortable to leave with an exposed trigger with a chambered round ready to fire, and single action only guns would have a safety to worry about disengaging. Basically, for me, a DA/SA gun is just the best choice for this situation. YMMV.

I want a 9mm since ammunition for it is more affordable than any other common centerfire handgun ammunition (more practice on my tight budget), it is effective with modern JHP defensive ammunition, and has controllable recoil for better follow up shot time.

So, with that out of the way, I have been looking at many different options over many months and I'm starting to zero in on some that I like. One that is leading the pack is the CZ P-09:

It's a very interesting gun, various video and online "gun rag" reviews give favorable impressions. It has a capacity of 19+1 as well which is quite nice. It checks off a lot of boxes for me, even has some nice things like no finger grooves (those never seem to fit my hand right) and a rail for a flashlight (which I definitely plan to add). I also may or may not get night sights, which a few different companies offer for this gun.

I am asking for any and all opinions, good and bad, on this pistol. I think I'm finally ready to get a dedicated modern home defense pistol to replace my trusty Makarov PM. I just need to know if this CZ gun is a reliable and good choice for this job.

Thanks!

Reliable? Yes

Well built? Yes

Good trigger? Yes

Accurate? Yes

A good choice as a defensive sidearm? If you want to go pistol, then definitely yes.

I've heard good things about them owners and online. Personally they look too tactical gaudy for me but it would be hard to choose a better gun for your purpose.

If 2K amatuer shooters can put 30K through 4 of them in 8 weeks with no malfunctions and no parts breakage, yep, I would think they are GTG.

I picked this pistol for American Marksman because I believed it was easy to maintain, shoot and hit with for the untrained shooter, and that was proven to be correct.

We had about 15 malfunctions total, 3 were a bad round of ammo and a dozen were shooting one handed, out to the side, obvious weak grip issues, usually with the gun held low on the grip as well.

My wife is keeping one of them. :D

I've got no issue with DA/SA, but I would suggest having something to cover the trigger guard regardless of action type. Even if it's a kydex OWB holster that you just slide off the gun. Waking up in the night and reaching for an unholstered, loaded pistol out in the open never stuck me as a good idea. I like a step in between, whether it's drawing it from a holster, a case, etc. I know it adds some time to getting into action, but we should be talking a second or less. But that's just an opinion and it's your call.

As for the pistol itself, I've owned a few P-01s, 2 75BDs, and a P-07 Duty and all of them were reliable. After you test that particular pistol for function I'd personally have no qualms using it for self defense.

The P-09 is definitely up to the task of home defense. I did have a P-07 on my night stand until last week. I put it in the safe and replaced it with a Jericho for the time being. No reason, other than I wanted to look at something different for a while. Before the 07, my night stand gun was a p-01.

I think to some extent we gun people over think the whole handguns for home defense topic. I truly believe if you have a handgun that is known to be reliable from a good company, has a halfway decent magazine capacity with any common centerfire round, shoot it well, maintain it, and keep decent defensive ammunition in it it will do the job well. Were you to roll over and grab a handgun for the bump in the night, I believe you would achieve the exact same effect with a Glock, Sig, CZ, HK, Colt, Ruger, Smith and Wesson etc. (assuming you had trained for that particular firearm).

With that in mind, get what you want to shoot. I just ordered a P-01 for my 21st birthday. It's intended for my daily carry gun. I have had a 75BD for 3 years now that I chose based on feel. It fit my hand well. I wanted a DA/SA in 9mm so I ended up with the 75BD. The low recoil and good trigger along with decent capacity all turned out to be positivies. So I got the P-01 to keep a lot of those same benefits in a slightly smaller and lighter package that would be more practical to carry. I have not shot the P-07 or P-09 yet, but having handled both extensively as a salesperson in a store that carried them, they both lack the CZ magic that I feel when I try their metal guns. So I don't buy them.

I could have gotten a Sig P320 or a Glock 19 or one of several dozen other guns and been just as adequately protected, but I went with the one that felt best to me. That happened to be a CZ for me as well.

Excellent guns. Loved my almost everyone except those with small hands.
The distance from the back of the grip to the trigger makes them difficult to use well if you have very small hands.

I love my P-07, which is the same gun, just a bit smaller. Great guns - reliable, solid, accurate and smooth shooting. You really can't go wrong.
