CZ Kadet Conversion (Range Report)

As reported earlier in another post, my Kadet conversion kit came Wednesday. I also got two extra mags ($29 ea.) to go with the one supplied with the kit.

It took me all of about 5 minutes to fit it to my CZ and this with me taking my time to make sure I got a good tight fit!! All that was required was a little sanding on the barrel assembly where it mates with the frame rails and a raised area on the front of the barrel lug. I had to wait for the weekend to test fire it.

Went to the range today with my son and a brick of 22LR to test it out. It's very accurate and only required 4 clicks of windage to the right to have it firing centered to point of aim. It does however have the rounded firing pin, but I only had one failure to fire and that was during the last 50 rounds of a total of 300 we fired through it today.

My son and I were easily able to keep all rounds within the 10 ring out to 15 yards hand held and at 25 yards we only had a few stray out to the 9 ring on a B-27 target. This was probly more shooting mistakes rather than the gun. It's well worth the $189 for the kit.

I will see if CZ-USA will send me a chiseled replacement firing pin for it without having to send the whole kit back. Removing the firing pin is the same procedure as on my 1911 so they really don't need to have the whole assembly back I wouldn't think.

Bandit, I spoke with Mike today, CZ-USA's gunsmith, about the chisle firing pin and he said they will replace it only if you experience problems with it. Have you heard different? I just fit my Kadet to my frame today and will try it out this afternoon.

I had a couple failure to fires.. well one out of the first 300 rounds :D but it fired on the second strike. I shipped mine back but didn't ask Mike (who seemed very concerened and helpful) on the phone whether it would be replaced if it hadn't of malfunctioned.

Mike stated they were out of the repair kits but he would swap mine out for a new kit that has the chiseled firing pin. It should be here tomorrow.

Only had a chance to run 30 rounds through the Kadet kit tonight. No problems, I was only concerned with function and was still happy with the accuracy acheived. I will try it out again this weekend.

Are there 'known issues' with the firing pin of the CZ cadet conversion?

I have a friend who has an early one, and I believe he has many failures due to apparently light strikes. If this is a known problem I'd like to let him know.

Thanks

TS, I don't know too what extent, but many Kadet kits left the factory with round firing pins instead of the chisel shaped firing pins you would expect for a rimfire pistol. I have not had a chance to fire enough rounds yet to notice any problems with my pistol's round firing pin.

The Scandinavian, This is a known problem with the Kadet kit and a fix is available from CZ either in a repair kit or a replacement of the unit as a whole. Granted I only had one misfire through the first 300 rounds but as things break in and parts start to limber up I can see where the incidence of misfires can rise to higher levels.

I suggest your friend call Mike (CZ-USA's Chief Gunsmith) at 1-800-955-4486 to discuss the problem and make arrangements to have it repaired/replaced. At the time I called, Mike said they were out of the repair kits and advised me to send in the whole unit to be exchanged for a new one manufactured with the chiseled point firing pin.

Hope this helps,

Knowing beforehand that there was a fix available weighed heavy in my decision on whether or not to purchase a kit. After seeing that the one I received indeed had the round vs chiseled firing pin really motivated me to give the kit the acid test on the first outing.

I must say it went longer than anticipated before a misfire, but the potential for this to get worse is there. Luckily CZ has a fix for it and is now producing all kits with the preferred chissel pointed firing pin and are very receptive to repairing or replacing the units that do not.

Thanks very much! I have forwarded your posts on this subject. He is also here in Finland, but I suppose he can get help through the importer here.

Thanks again

TS. The internet is a fabulous tool, isn't it?! I

I just got a replacement for my original.. Mike sent me ANOTHER round firing pin one...I'm less than thrilled but I'll give it a try on the same ammo that the ist on failed on.. I was getting 4 or more misfires out of a magazine of 10 on that on with some .22 ammo.

Bandit,
Thanks for the report. I'm going to get one of these conversions, but it looks like I'm going to have to either-Take my chances ordering one over the net or paying about 30 bucks more for it from the local CZ dealer. The advantage form the local being i can check it out before I buy it. really, considering the shipping situation where I'm at, 30 bucks is nothing at all compared to the time/trouble and expense of shipping. The ONLY place I can ship from is a *mortage your castle* mail boxes etc.

Oh buy one from Jake at www.northeastfirearms.com $189 delivered and he is fast.... I got mine in 5 days. He even has a special on the spare mags for $25 bucks instead of the usual $29..which is what I paid through my dealer.

I don't understand the thing about the firing pin? I know most .22 LR's use a chisle tipped FP but I have a few that use a rounded FP and I have never had any problems with them? I think it also may have something to do with FP protrusion, how far it comes out and hits the rim of the round.

Both my 617 10 shot revolver and my M6 Scouts have a rounded FP and I have yet to have a ignition problem?

Thanks for the infor about the conversion, I am a sucker for things like this and am planning on getting one soon.

Boy, I've been waiting for Beretta to market their .22 conversion for the 92 series, but it's always being delayed for one reason or another. And I'll be dead before Cenier gets their backlist filled.

So I'd like to pick up one of these CZ conversions. Who's got the best prices?

Strayhorn,

For the best price I have found on the Kadet conversion kit check out www.northeastfirearms.com or go to the gear for sale section of TFL. $189 is the best price I found anywhere and Jake answers questions in a timely manner (refreshing change from normal internet sales sites) and ships quickly.

No, I don't work there but I am a satisfied customer. :)

I'm gonna run a special for anyone who calls or emails me and mentions this topic "CZ range report". I'll knock $10.00 off the price of the kit bringing it down to $179.00 + shipping.
