CZ and Browning Hi Power

Guys, just got back from the local gun shop/pawn shop and seen two items of interest. 1st was the Browning hi power in decent shape. Had alot of scratches on it but the action and barrel seemed good. It had a Hi cap mag in it and was selling for $499.

2nd was a CZ 75B brand new and believe me when I tell you this. They were asking $450. Is that high or what? Im gonna be getting a 9 pretty soon and I know if its a CZ I'll find one alot cheaper than that. The price just blew me away.

You guys think the HI power is a good price? I've heard alot of talk about them from around TFL.

CZ 75's

CZ had a big inventory of "Turkish" military pistols made in '96 to clear out. Word is that they have, and all further sales will be new production "civilian" pistols, no high-caps, blued instead of polymer, and selling for a minimum of $400 and often more. Locally they were selling like hotcakes at $399.

browning hi caps can be a little or alot..

You mentioned the hi cap that was with the browning. With some guns this can be a major selling point, as hi caps run an arm and a leg. Currently you can get hi cap mag's for the browning from $12 to $60. It can be hard to tell what is what as the mag body is not always marked by manufacture (seems like it rarely is). So I would not let the hi cap sway me in the least. I am using 17 round nickle mags in my practical and have had great success. They cost under $25 from CDNN.

On a lighter note, I can also say that my thumb has increased in strength from loading all 17 rounds on those springs that could double as shock absorbers on some small imports.....

best of luck. If you can, don't rush your decision. It really is half the fun. If you look up any of the "help me in my choice" threads you'll see that all of the sr members suggest serious range time with the choices. I'd listen to them.

Magazine Safety?

Do all High Powers have a magazine safety? It sounds like a significant negative on an otherwise extremely well regarded pistol.

Magazine disconnect = significant disadvantage?

Not sure what you mean.

Tactically, I'm not sure that I'd be in position to shoot lone bullet from my gun while changing mags, only to have to insert the mag and rack the slide. Theoretically could happen but what are the chances. It was done in the movies once....

Another consideration is that mag safety keeps hi cap mags from dropping as free. New mags have a spring where the more dangerous hi capacity bullets used to live. It kicks out mags nicely. Some old mags drop fine, others will with a bit of polishing on the face where the disconnect touchs on the mag.

Kind of a pain during at the end of a match to:
drop the mag
rack the slide
insert an empty mag
drop the hammer
remove the mag

.... all in order to show the saftey officer that you are "clear"

The biggest "disadvantage"--- removing it can do wonders for your trigger! Oh wait, maybe that is an advantage.

Both are on the high side...

In all honesty, both are a bit overpriced.

I've seen NIB CZ75s for $350, and that's here in "high-priced" Kalifornia!

I haven't seen a NIB HP here in a VERY LONG time, but I've seen them on the net for about $550. So depending on how used that HP is, you may or may not be paying too much. If it's in "like new" condition, I'd consider it.

I'd talk with the shop owner to see if he'd be willing to drop the prices a bit.
