CZ-75BD Police or Sig P228

I love posing questions like this, hopefully I will get some good insight. If you had the choice between buying a new CZ-75BD Police or a well-used-serviceable Sig P228, which would you go with and why. It may very well see use in my duty holster at some point, but basically I am looking for something new. I have never seen a CZ-75 (as they no one stocks them here) but hear nothing but rave reviews about them. Of course the Sig P228 is a classic and still top of the line 9mm. Thanks for your input.

While I like purchasing NIB handguns, given the choice
between a new CZ and a used but serviceable Sig-Sauer
P228; I believe I would take the P228. Particularily so if
it is one of the West German model's, and has high cap
magazine's with it. Finish'es are nothing but looks; and
there's a lot of great finish'es available to the consumer
these day's. And, it just seems that Sig's orgininating
from West Germany are solidly built; with very
close tolerance's, which helps in accuracy. Both, my
beloved P220, and my P228 were manufactured in
West Germany; and I don't have the first complaint
about either.

I will be pasting my reply to the "CZ or Beretta..." question in a moment as I think it is relevant here as well. But first, a few specific CZ v. SIG thoughts.

Both are high quality guns which will probably never let you down. Both are well made, good looking (IMHO), reliable, accurate, etc.

Which is more accurate? I don't know, I've never shot a CZ in .40 or a SIG in 9mm. My 9mm CZ 75 is the most accurate 9mm I've ever shot. The SIG 239 that I got to shoot was the most accurate .40 I've ever shot. I'd be very interested to shoot a comprable 9mm SIG back to back with my CZ. I'd guess there would be very little difference.

Better workmanship? For the most part they are comprable. From a purely cosmetic standpoint, CZ doesn't put forth quite as much effort on making the internals look as nice (still look good, just not as good as the exterior of the CZ or the interior of a SIG).

Quality, reliability, durability. I doubt if there is any difference. I won't repeat what I say in the pasted message so you will see what I have to say below.

I love my CZ and I will buy more soon. I will eventually buy a SIG or two. If I had unlimited money and had neither, I'd get the CZ first. It is as good a gun as any. It is currently very inexensive. One of these days CZ is going to realize what they could ask for these guns and prices will go up 50-100%.

The pasted message follows:
I think in any CZ or... question I'd have to say go with the CZ, regardless of the second gun in the question. If you want something else after you have the CZ fine, but get a CZ!

I did a lot of research here and at the CZ forum before I got mine and they have a great reputation. I've only had mine for a month but I'd say the reputation is more than deserved.

It is very reliable- I have only had one minor hiccup in 1300 rounds, and that was when I let the oil on the rails go completely dry. It is my most accurate gun. It is highly durable, it was designed as a military gun so it was made to take a beating. The exterior fit and finish is incredible, the interior fit and finish is good. I find that it fits my hands very well. Some 9mm models are still available from the factory with high-cap mags (the BD Police and the Mil). Also, the factory made up a ton of 9mm high-caps just before the ban so there are plenty on the market and at good prices (you can still order them from the factory for $48 and some sources are less). Both the "polymer" finish and the nickel finish are highly durable finishes. In my opinion the gun equals SIG for quality and workmanship. You get all that for a gun that costs the same as (or less than) a Ruger or Taurus auto.

A better comparison would probably be the PCR vs the P228... both alloy frame, compact decocker pistols. I've owned a SigSauer P228 and currently have a CZ-75B. The P228 is a bit smoother and more refined internally, and maybe a little more accurate, but only by a hair. Of course, it will also cost more than a CZ by a fair margain, and personally I think the grip shape and overall subjective feel of the CZs is better... the P228 feels kind of top heavy and strange to me.

CZ 75D Compact PCR

I also think the CZ 75D Compact PCR is more fitting into the "vs SIG 228" group. Actually the PCR have better quality finnish tnan most of others CZ's (trough they are very fine guns too).
Comparing those two is more on your personal taste - you can hardly et better compact 9mm than SIG P-228, but there are some equaly good guns which may fit better to someone. CZ 75 PCR is one of them, nice, well ballanced in hand and i bet it is precise as the P-228. Depends on the shooter, someone may shoot better one of those two guns, over the other.
I would choose the SIG 228 over the full size CZ 75BD (because I prefer the safety equiped "B" model much more), but I would also choose the CZ 75 Compact PCR over the SIG 228.

The FFL dealer at a local armory showed me a SIG with a European style mag release (I fumbled around clumsily with it before having to ask for help.).

The CZ-75D PCR (Police) has the familiar 1911 style mag release.

Qualitywise, SIG is unquestionably better. But given a choice between a used SIG and a new CZ, I would personally go for the CZ. Fits my hand better.

Unless it was a used SIG 239 in very good condition; then I'd have to think twice.

So I guess the bottom line would be: get whichever one works for you.

I own the Sig 228 and I am happy with the way it shoots and how it handles. I have never shot the CZ. I can tell you that a SIG in V.G. condition is an excellent choice that you'll never be sorry you made. In my opinion of course.

cz

My cz 85 is the most accurate 9mm that I have ever owned and it has been in good company with a sig 225 and a browning hp. I would take the cz.

there are many more choices of leather for the sig.

You'll get far more bang for the buck with a CZ, without sacrificing much, if anything.

The main advangage for the SIG, for me, is the sights... they're easier to use for me. YMMV.

I'm going to vote for the CZ-75BD, only because I own one.

But as others in this threat point out, a CZ-75D Compact PCR is really more comparable to the Sig.

My CZ-75BD (full size) cost $339 + state tax + $18 rubber hogue grips. The PCRs usually sell for around $399. Keep in mind that the "compact" CZs use their own magazines, you can't put a 15rd fullsize CZ-75 magazine into them. There are 13 rd prebans available for the PCR series, but they're relatively uncommon, and can go for $60 each.

My 75-BD has had approx. 800 rounds through it so far, as I purchased in only last month. No failures to feed or other trouble, even with inexpensive Winchester 100rd "White box" target ammo. The factory sights did come a little bit maladjusted, which I still need to rectify by laser boresighting...

But don't let that discourage you, the 75BD is an excellent gun, and a great value for the money. Easily equal in quality to $650-$750 pistols from other manufacturers.

Keep in mind that the "compact" CZs use their own magazines, you can't put a 15rd fullsize CZ-75 magazine into them.

Actually, in addition to the rare 13 rnd mags for the compact models they will use the 15rnd mags, they just jut out a little. Also, the 15 rounders are readily available and relatively cheap. It may not be perfect for carry (though the mag is narrow enough the extra length may be ok) but it is great at the range and you can at least use it as a reload with no concealability issues.

I had to make a similar choice about a year ago. I was comparing a new Sig 225 and the CZ-75 PCR. They were priced the same as Sig was discontinuing the 225. I chose the CZ. It fit my hand better, and I felt more comfortable with the location of the controls. They were about the same size, but the CZ was a double stack and higher capacity than the 225. Now this is not an issue with the 228, but I bleieve its a little larger than the CZ. After a year of using the CZ, I have no regrets. Both the 225 and 228 are great pistols also. I am just not as comfortable with them as the CZ's. You really can't go wrong with either the Sig or CZ.

Your question is a poser. Why? I own and enjoy both pistols. I am sure my Sig P228 is the more accurate and feels better in my hand. I am not sure the P228 will feel the same in your hand.

I own several CZ pistols and hold them in very high regard. I am sure the CZ75 is among the best buys out there. I am not sure about my PCR as a carry piece. Why? The decocker rubs me when I carry this hand gun in a Kramer IWB holster.

I suggest that you rent all three, if possible, and choose the one you like best.

Regards,

Richard

They are both good guns...period. The 228 does feel more "top heavy" than the PCR and it doesnt feel as "nice" in my hands.
As far as accuracy goes, the 228 I have shot isnt as accurate as the CZ's I own and have shot before, but very close. The triggers are bloody nice on both guns.
The 15 round mags DO work in the PCR and Compact, the 13 rnd Hi Caps for the PCR/Compact are out there yet are expensive and hard to find. If you replace the stock mag spring with a Wolff +5% spring, the capacity goes to 14-15 rnds and is still flush with the grip housing :D
For the money, I would get the CZ and I love and respect Sig guns alot. Very close comparison, the CZ is just a better deal.
Shoot well
