CZ 75 questions

I bought my son a P01 a few months back. Since I had a chance to shoot it, I want one. But, I want the full size version. Are the SP01 the same grip and reach as the P01? If not, do any of the full size versions have the same grip and reach? I am waiting for my LGS to get back to me with an available list.

All of the metal-framed CZs share the same basic grip design, although the grip on the compact (and sub-compact models) are less long through the grip area (i.e., they use shorter magazines.)

Note: some of the full-size CZs have a different trigger shape, and that may make trigger reach a little different. I've not owned an SP-01, but suspect it has a different trigger than the P-01. That will make the grip of the SP-01 feel a bit different than the P-01, although the grip itself is almost identical. The trigger CAN be changed by the owner.

The SP-01 isn't really a larger version of the P-01, it's actually an improved version of the 75B with some P-01-like features designed for gun-game competition. There have been two or three versions of the SP-01, including a steel-framed P-01 and a polymer framed version called the P-01 Phantom; some were available with safeties and some with decocker.

I thought the Phantom had been discontinued, but the CZ USA website (updated for 2017) shows ONLY the polymer-framed Phantom, and a Shadow 2 (which is like an upscale SP-01). None of the more traditional 75B models are shown, and the current CZ-USA website doesn't even show the stainless steel models or the compact models. I suspect that site is a work in process, still being updated.

You should be able to find a used SP-01, or check with the CZ Custom Shop about whether they can get you an SP-01. (CZ also makes a SA version of the 75B, as well as stainless steel versions of the traditional 75b, but with ambidextrous safeties. Except for the Phantom, all full-size 75Bs have steel frames, while the P-01 is alloy; the SP-01 will be a LOT heavier than the P-01 -- but that makes recoil less noticeable.)

You might want to look at the CZ P-07, or P-09, while you're at it. Similar, but not exactly the same grip. I've had a lot of CZs over the years, and still have an 85 Combat, along with several CZ-pattern guns (called "clones", but they aren't clones). I also have a P-07, which I like a lot -- and prefer it to the alloy or steel CZ compacts.
