CZ-75 Compact Decocker Question

I looked at a CZ-75 Compact recently that had a decocker rather than the usual CZ safety. The odd thing is that it drops the hammer to a "half-cock" position rather than all the way down. I discovered that I could press the decocking lever, then pull the trigger, and it would go all the way down, but this seems like a dangerous design (if you get in a hurry and pull the trigger a little early, you cold fire the pistol). Is this gun intended to be carried with the hammer at the half-cock position? Or is there some other way this is supposed to work? I'm used to my S&W, in which the decocker drops the hammer completly. Thanks.

Doug,

Your best bet would be to email CZUSA (www.cz-usa.com) If my experience is an indication they'll respond quickly. I had a CZ75 Compact and I'm sorry I sold it. It was very reliable, accurate and fun to shoot. Unfortunately it was very heavy. I wish I could've gotten the aluminum frame version you have.

So many pistols, so little money.

No "decocker" really drops the hammer all the way down and if it did, you'd have discharge. If you look at the S&W with the hammer down in the fired position and the hammer down with the safety/decocker engaged, you'll note that the hammer is slightly to the rear. This is because the barrel of the safety protrudes ever so slightly and prevents the hammer from going all the way forward.

The decocking safety is a good idea and I wouldn't worry about a hammer being at what appears to be half cocked on a DA/SA gun. The CZ75 is a fine firearm (I own an older model) and wouldn't hesitate in buying another...but I'm waiting for their .45 version to be made with ambidextrious safety.

4V50Gary,
I should have been a little more clear. I realize that the S&W decocker doesn't initially drop the hammer all the way, but I believe when you flip the decocker/safety back up, the hammer drops all the way. This is the way I carry it. I assume it relies on an inertia firing pin or some sort of transfer bar to keep the hammer from pushing the firing pin into the primer when the hammer is fully down. The CZ I handled left the hammer at a fairly pronounced half-cock position unless I pulled the trigger at some point (which isn't necessary on my S&W, or my Mauser HSc - they can be completely uncocked using only the decocker). Thanks.
