Advice needed:

I just had a local gunshop put a hold on a nice used CZ 550 chambered for 7 x 57. A good price, and I liked the shop. The gun is going to be used by both me AND my wife for deer hunting and range work (Till I can get some more cash together, than it's hers), so I didn't want something that has a real bad kick. Question is - Was this a good choice? Don't know much about the cartridge. Came in looking for a .243 or a .270. Can anyone tell me about the best stuff to feed it? He recommended Federal Premiums, 140 grain.

Thanks In advance,

Greg

7x57 is a SWEET cartridge. I have a Ruger M77 Mark II. The Hornady 139 grain Factory load (2700 fps at the muzzle) is the most accurate in my rifle. Just as accurate is the 175 grain Federal classic load, closely followed by the 140 grain Federal Classic Load. Also try the Hornady light magnum 139 grain SST at 2830 fps. You will love this caliber. Recoil is mild. The Germans called it the "happy medium" cartridge and I can see why. You won't go wrong with the Remington 140 grain corelokt load either. I have not tried Winchesters 145 grain load. I can't see any need for use of premium ammo unless you are hunting something larger than deer. A buddy of mine shot a huge Vermont deer -- 8 pointer -- with the 175 grain load. He ran 30 feet and collapsed in a heap. Save your money and go with standard fodder.

Don't forget to try out some of the Czech S&B 7mm Mauser loads in the rifle while you are at it. Their ammo is good and at a price that is hard to beat these days.
There's a good chance that one of those Czech S&B loads was the one those Czech rifle designers were thinking about when they made that rifle.
The rifle should be a classic. Of course, you have to shoot it to find out if it is really any good.
