CZ 527 Wood Stock?

Ok, stock material question:

Picked up a used CZ 527 in .22 Hornet w. a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 in quasi-NIB shape (surprising for a rifle made in 97) for very cheap at the local Gander Mountain (think it was mislabeled) and it runs beautifully but it has an unusual wood stock.

It's the Lux style stock (hump back w. a nice cheek welding comb, rifle has irons) but it's much lighter in color than any of the walnut stocks I've seen from CZ (though it's darker than maple). I thought it might be beech but the grain patterns don't seem to fit. I'm certain it's an actual CZ stock (checkering and style/form) as well and it actually looks pretty neat but it's driving me crazy not knowing what it's made of.

Anyone know if CZ used different woods for their stocks back then (1997, pre CZ move KS City era) or if they offered replacement stocks later on in different lighter wood?

On a side note, anyone have any recs. on a good commercial varmint round for it? Only have the cheap Prvi stuff for now...

CZ does offer some models in laminate stocks. I wonder if yours is, possibly, an unstained laminate stock?

Don't think so, looks like solid wood (I have a laminated XT-17v and it looks nothing like that)...

Head scratcher...

.

CZ most likely got/used a run of light-colored walnut stockwood, not exactly unheard of.

I had a 527-Lux Hornet, and liked the stock ergonomics a lot.
Mine had pretty deluxe wood, with a nice dark color & graining - luck of the draw.

The .22 Hornet can be finicky.

Best factory ammo results so far with a Ruger M77 came with Hornady 35 grain V-Max and Nosler 40 grain Ballistic Tips. Both averaged under 1 inch at 100 yards.

No other factory ammo did.

Winchester JHP 46 grain averaged 1.050 and Remington HP # R22HN2 45 grain ammo averaged 1.076.

Nothing else was under 1.5 inches at 100 yards.

Thanks, managed to find a box of the Hornady stuff at a LGS and picked it up, not the cheapest stuff but far from outrageous. On the downside it was just the 1 box and I can't find any online anywhere...

Every rifle is different so I would keep looking for different ammos and different weights to see what your rifle likes.

Good luck with your Hornady ammo.

I have a 527 with the laminated stock, sweet rifle.

I've shot both handloads and factory in mine.

When it comes to handloads I have a load using Speer 50 gr TNT hollow points, they easily print 1/2 MOA all day long.

As for factory ammo I've used Winchesters 45 gr JHP loads and they shoot as good as my handloads do.

My rifle is one with the slower twist so the lighter bullets seem to shoot the best.
