CZ-52

I have seen the Makarov CZ-52 mentioned and described. Does anyone have any experience with this gun, pro or con? How does it compare to the Colt .45 ACP?

Very loud. Even the two guys next to me at the outdoor range were commenting on how much noise it makes and they were firing .45 ACPs. Tomorrow I'm taking the two that I have to an indoor range and ask for a spot as far away from everyone else as I can get.

the cz 52 is a great roller locked designed pistol similar to a h+k or g3 with its lock up.its accurate can pierce both sides of a level 2 kevlar vest as well, the 7.62x25 russian round is a hot load at 1900 fps as well.i shoot 45 and the cz52 in 7.62 and 9 mm nato. its looks were derived for a walther or mauser point of view as well. just as accurate as can be on top .its my number one carry gun while the colt stays home.parts are cheap, there is a number of barrels in different calibers for under 80 bucks usually so take your pick if you dont like the 7.62.
brass is available to use home reloads as well, and it will shoot the 7.63 (30 cal)mauser altho that round is anemic compared to the standard issue 7.62x25. p.s. i got mine for 125$ so dont pay some shmuk more than 140$ call century arms ,they still have them and are all arsenal reworks in great shape .mine was practically unused mint.

7.62x25 varies in velocity a lot. A nearly identical 7.63 Mauser is mild, Tokarev is hot, Czech ammo is VERY hot. Fortunately, CZ52 will take almost any propely stored surplus ammo while with a Mauser C96 or a TT33 you must be very careful to get the right loads.

I shot several CZ52s. They ergonomics are passable, accuracy is mediocre (better with milder loads) but passable, recoil and blast depend on the load and range from mild to slightly less than .357mag. Steel-core Czech surplus is reputed to penetrate very well.

I bought my CZ-52 for $99, one of the best buys I ever got. Very accurate and the round has a good punch. They are EXTREMELY well made and hardy. I once read an article in a gun rag that said, if the CZ-52 were manufactured today, it would cost over $1000 due to machining and work put into it. Don't know if that is true, but it is one of my favorite handguns.

Old Hawk: I've seen chrono reports of CZ ammo at 1600fps, but never 1900. What kind of ammo is that?

**oops**
I just opened another window and discovered that I was talking about the CZ-83... so take a good look at that gun as well ;) http://www.cz-usa.com/cz83.html
Enjoy,
Ben

glockorama, im using the steel cased green lacquered shell czech issue subgun ammo, last crohnys varied between 1890 to 1910.other than that i also have a buddy who werks up loads for me carefully , as far as accuracy goes it varies piece to piece with the condition theyre in,i lucked out on mine. at 25 yards all the rounds make a nice 3-4 inch hole on the target with the 7.62x25, with the new federal 9 mm nato barrel slightly smaller
groups were obtained.i love mine, less bulkier to carry in a way and doesnt seem to bother me much as the 1911 does after a long day.i also added in the hardened steel roolers to the barrel as well from karl at makarov.com just so i wouldnt have to do that sooner than later as some of the surplus rollers on the fed barrels are korean made or softer than standard issue and wear out ,why they got them from them im not sure but the newer barrels are great, am thinking of the stainless steel one in 7.62 just for corrosives.ALSO GUYS look at the frame around the trigger gaurd, if you spot a Z stamping then you know your piece has been retrofitted with the newer safety which has solved the problem with firing when using the decocker!
if yours was got by century arms they will retrofit and send it back as a freebie service.also the 2 numbers on the side indicate what year the pistol was made as well.

I enjoy shooting my CZ-52 and for the money, it is pretty cool! I paid about 100 bucks for mine. Lotsa muzzle blast and noise, but what a sturdy pistol. Mine throws the empties for miles!
I consider it a bit too big and heavy for my own carry, but the thinness could make it a good choice for others.
A really speedy round, the 7.62x25 has punch-through power like few other pistols.
I believe I have used the Chinese ammo and now have some Polish corrosive, too.
I consider mine as a "fun" gun, and a great conversation starter at the range.

And if you hear from my Louise, won't you tell her I love her so?

Yeah, the CZ-52 is a great piece to pull out and say "...but have you ever shot one of THESE?... here, try it" :D There is a lot of corrosive and just generally dirty ammo out there, a lot of which is '50s production military surplus, but despite this (and a lot of split cases), I have yet to have a single jam/misfire with mine. My only complaint is getting that &$*#^%( barrel out for cleaning .
S&B makes some boxer primed reloadable ammo and Fiocchi makes .30 Mauser (about 2 or 3 times the price), but I have yet to get my hands on any of either.
Penetration with this caliber IS INCREDIBLE. Compared to 9mm or .45, it's like shooting a high-velocity power drill.... or something like that :D Recoil is said to be somewhere between a .357 and a .44. All I know is, after shooting my CZ-52, my 9mm seems pretty tame...

Ben: you must have the CZ-52 and the CZ-50/70 confused. The -52 is as large as a standard 1911. The 50/70 is the design that's similar in size to a Walther PPk.

The things I don't like about the -52 is the grip angle, lack of slide release (retrofit available from Federal Arms), the shape of the trigger and guard, and the mag release. You'll always get inquiries when you shoot it, and it is pretty fun, once you get used to it.

I usually use the tip of a cleaning rod or a brass punch to remove/reinstall the barrel. Using the magazine floorplate can bend them pretty badly as one of my mags can attest.

I usually use the point of a pair of angled needle-nosed pliers. It doesn't work TOO bad. I guess if I would read the manual I downloaded, I may have thought about using the mag, but, as with most guns, there is usually a better (and more disposable) tool around than what's suggested in the "field method". I thought maybe some part of the cleaning kit would work, but apparently not. (All I got with mine was the gun, 2 mags, and a holster coated in NASTY GOOEY CAMO TAPE!!! YUCK! :()

BTW, since we're on the CZ-52 subject, any thoughts on reloading 7.62x25 with some hollow points? I remember finding one of the component manufacturers that makes a JHP bullet for .30 carbine that is the same diameter and very similar weight....(a little better alternative to sizing down a .32)

Thank you all for the response. This forum is great for info.

Have an Officers' Colt .45 and was thinking about trading it on a CZ-52. The .45 jams a lot -- stovepipes every 5-6 rounds. Had it checked and it's a function of grip -- unless you lock your arms very tight, any recoil your elbows absorb keeps the spring from cycling the action fully and you have a jam. Got the .45 on a trade for my Ruger P90, which never jammed but was a real hog leg.

Can anyone compare the recoil between the CZ-52 and Colt .45, esp. in light of the problem I have?

Old Hawk:

Your 9mm barrel for the CZ52 sounds very interesting. Who makes them and how much do they cost?

Wow! I've been looking at a Makarov, but 1900 fps? This pistol sounds like one heck of a potent blaster. Where is a good place to pick one up? Are there different models, or manufacturers?

Another little known fact is that the arsenals that reconditioned/test-fired the CZ52s also marked the slides for their accuracy. On the top of the slide in the first 2 inches from the muzzle, there should be between 1 and 5 dings (about the size of an impression of a fine tip ball point pen). The accuracy of the barrel is represented by the number of the dings, with 1 ding having the best accuracy, and 5 having the poorest. I had found this out from a friend in WI that collects Czech firearms (his family has roots there) and had a second verification on this from a gent that had a CZ52 site (and of course I lost his address).
