CZ 52 Questions

Some friends and I are thinking of ordering CZ52s, but we have a few of questions:

(1) Does anyone know for sure if they are California-legal? I know they are C&R, so I think they should be, but it seems like CA may have some additional restrictions, so we want to be sure.

(2) Has anyone bought or seen the current Century Internationl Arms CZ52s? They are described as being refinished, in "excellent" condition, with new barrels, an extra magazine, and a holster. I would appreciate any feedback on what we could expect these to be like.

(3) Any other sources we should consider (not many currently show them as "in stock").

(4) What are good ammo choices (preferably non-corrosive and high velocity, unless we can save a lot by buying corrosive ammo)?

Any other tips for new CZ 52 buyers/owners? We want these mostly just for fun. They seem like interesting guns for a low price. We'll probably do some long-range shooting with these high-velocity pistols.

Thanks.

I can only answer several things.
1.do not dry fire a CZ-52-you will break the firing pin-get a spare
2.I brought in a Century"excellent" CZ-52 and it looked like it had been drug behind a tank from the Bering Strait to the Black sea.It may be hard to find a nice one at a wholesaler right now.
3.Sellier and Bellot makes a nice new round for it.

I would strongly recommend that you pop over to www.makarov.com and order a Harrington firing pin and an 18.5 lb Wolf recoil spring.
Like most weapons manufactured by Cold War ComBloc nations, the 52 got all the broad strokes of design and robust use correct, but they skimped on some of the details.

I second the recommendation for the Harrington firing pin. Now only will it stand up to dry firing, but it also improves the trigger pull 200%! I was amazed at the difference. :)

Guys,
Thanks for the info.

Tropical Z,
Was your Century pistol a recent purchase? Did you send it back, and if so, how did Century handle it?

I've read several comments on other boards from folks who have bought Century CZ52s recently and been pleased with the condition - either they are refinished (blue) or the original gray finish is in good shape. I would like to hear more experiences with these pistols and Century. I have a couple of friends who are interested in ordering with me (so we can get free shipping), but they are more or less trusting my judgement about these pistols being okay. I've had good luck ordering Makarovs, Mausers, etc. before, but don't quite know what to expect with these - I would hate to get stuck with junk (or disappoint my friends).

I got mine from CAI about 2 weeks ago. It is vg+. The finish on mine is parkerized black. It came with 1 magazine only and the cost is 114.

I say buy it, you can't beat the price.

Another pistol you may want to consider is the CZ-50 if you want concealibilty. only drawback on the 50 is the double action trigger pull is about 20 lbs and the caliber is 32ACP. CAI has these for 109. I took mine to the range recently and it shoots pretty well and the accuracy is decent for a little pistol.

If you FFL is on file with CAI, I recommend you give Christy S. a call at century, after calling the main number and sales rep(1). press 9 and 5. Tell her John(from Virginia who buys quite of few ammo) sent you and she'll take care of you.
