CZ 455 Engraving bullets.

My CZ 455 is leaving rifling engraving on CCI SV 22 LR bullets.
I've always thought this was good for accuracy to start the bullet into the barrel lands.

Now I'm wondering if this takes any special cleaning after use. :confused:

I usually let 22s take a bullet polish and don't clean.

But in this case, I'm wondering.

Are you saying that when you chamber a cartridge and then extract it, the bullet has intruded into the lands?

If you're happy with the average group size, I'd guess it's a non-issue. I doubt that there would be a leading problem.
 
If anything, I would think it would be less likely to need any special cleaning.

As long as the rounds chamber without any unusual effort I would think it's a non-issue.
 
Yep.
An extracted live round has contact marks.
I don't think it takes unusual effort to close bolt but I can tell it is a tight gun.
Loaded or unloaded, the bolt is tight.


Sorta like Remington rounds in an older Smith revolver.
 
"...thought this was good for accuracy..." It's neither here nor there. The whole off-the-lands thing with cf hand loads is a load tweaking thing that doesn't make much difference. It doesn't cause leading at all.
However, on a .22, it means the chamber is short or there's some kind of crud on the end of the chamber or in the chamber.
"...unusual effort to close bolt..." Ditto, but that's also an indicator of a headspace issue. Far more likely to be a crud issue though.
 
MY CZ 452 closes the bolt hard, my take is its a tight mechanism and I suspect it carries over to the next gen.

I'll run some bullets and see if marked.

My CZ also feeds a number of bullets hard, I have to put my thumb on the rear of the bolt and assist it to close.

Some it does fine with.

Hard closing ones can be the most accurate though not all.

On a good day it will shoot 1/2 MOA. Fairly lite rifle and not the best trigger, not intended as a bench rest. Most accurate 22 I ever shot (other than a Winchester pump of my moms from gazillion years ago)
 
I think I solved my own mystery.
I was going to take a picture of the effect and noticed that it is really only on one side of the bullet.

Soooo..... I chambered a round directly and not through the magazine and it is clean as a whistle so I think it's a mark from feeding through the mag.

It's plenty accurate for my use with the stock iron sights.

These are my first groups from this week. It is a ...new... gun.

I don't know how the 455 compares to the 452, generally the 452 shot all 22 decently.

It does have preference. While not a given mine like Norma TAC the best so far.


Fun to buy single boxes (now that 22 is available again) and try it out. I am going to paly with it. Some of the real trendy stuff I got before the shortage it shoots no better than bulk stuff. 22s are funny critters.

My brother had some old Blue Label Remington 22 Target that it likes quite well.
