Cylinder rings: to clean, or not to clean...

That is the question!

Seriously, after cleaning cylinder rings after a few range sessions I just said 'screw it' and are leaving them on my carry SP101.

Do other revolver guys actually clean them every time or just leave them?

When I was younger I thought it mattered.

Now I don't.

I remove any debris stuck to the front of the cylinder, such as lead. The carbon rings don't bother me.

If you mean the carbon rings on the face of the cylinder, I just brush off the fouling when cleaning the gun and leave it alone. They will just reappear every time you shoot anyway. They harm nothing at all.

I wipe it down after every time I shoot just to get the residue off. As far as the burnt in rings it's not worth the trouble, for all the effort you put in to get them off they'll just be back again next time you shoot.

I learned pretty early on that no matter how much you scrub the front of the cylinder, those rings come right back after the first cylinder full is shot. Now I just wipe the front down and make sure there is no buildup of lead or powder. The rings don't bother me.

I just clean the pistol and don't worry about the ring, it's there, if I remove it and I shoot it, it will be back. (Kinda like Arnold)

Must have too much time on my hands; I,scrub them off every time I get home from the range.......

I do too - it's one of those things where "The cleaner you keep it, the easier it is to keep it clean".

Even after putting a few hundred rounds through my revolver, the carbon rings wipe right off with a few passes from one of those polish-impregnated cloths. But if I were to wait several years before trying to remove them, it would probably turn into a multi-hour ordeal.

Most of the time we keep 'em cause we shoot alot,
however for longer term storage we clean 'em off
with lead away cloth-works great in a few seconds.

I don't bother & couldn't care less if they're there.
I clean what comes off easily & leave the rest, pretty much like the rest of the gun (excepting the chambers & bore, where I do put in more effort).
All of my revolvers have those rings.
They cause no damage, I don't care about a factory-clean & shiny cylinder face, and they just come right back again the next time the gun's fired.

I scrub them clean ...with a lead remover cloth - about twice a year...but like others said, they come back the first time you shoot em.

I do clean my guns after every range trip ..but cleaning the face of the cyclinder so its 100% bright ...just isn't really worth it.../ leaving them doesn't cause any excessive wear or anything / so most of the time, no, I don't clean the cyclinder faces.

For after the range, what the solvent and a rag don't get can wait until I do a major cleaning. I never really worried about it until I got my first stainless wheel gun, when it became noticeable.
