Cylinder cleaning

the cylinder of my revolver does not turn very freely like it used to. I was told it is probably gunked up and needs to be removed and soaked in something to clean it good.

Is this true or can it be cleaned without removing it? Someone told me to remove it and soak it overnight in kerosene. I've tried cleaning it good with break free and G96 to no avail

What type of revolver will help. In general though, you will notice the cylinder spins, or turns, on a rod, which more or less is like an axle. Follow whatever steps are required for you revolver (it won't be difficult), to remove the cylinder from the rod and or yoke, and proceed to clean the built up fouling with whatever gun cleaning solvent you prefer. Lube and re assemble. Done.

This will be much easier than you think. The gun should never get this dirty, on the other hand it is not necessary to take this step at every cleaning either. Experience will be the teacher.

IMO, the worst thing you could do would be a dunk cleaning on a gun you won't detail strip. I would apply weapons shield CLP or break free to both ends of the cylinder, spin the cylinder and wipe and excess. Repeat until it works smooth.

...or, most gunsmiths would detail strip and clean for like $50-$80, I would think.

I shoot my Python so much the cylinder gets gummed up now and then. I just give it to my girlfriend and tell her to put a drop of #9 in there and spin it a few times then repeat. After 30 minutes it's good as new, a drop of oil and back to the safe. No need to take anything apart. Also I love Breakfree CLP to lube and protect but not to clean. Solvent is solvent, lube is lube.
