Cutting barrel down for defense?

I have a single shot 12 g that currently has a 22" barrel. I was considering having it cut down to 18 1/2" for ease of storage and to increase it's ability to move around with, What will this do to recoil, pattern spread, etc....Can you still fire a slug through an 18 1/2" barrel? Thanks..

That small difference wont change recoil a bit, even with buckshot or heavy loads. I wouldnt worry about patterning either out to around 25 yrds. Slugs may loose some accuracy at longer ranges..

A single with a 22" bbl is several inches shorter than a 18 1/2" bbled punp or auto. I doubt you'll pick up much by bobbing it. You will lose the choke and increase blast and flash.

I'd leave it be....

Agree. Leave it. 22" is pretty handy, especially in a short action gun like you're describing.

Just threw a few on a bed. With guns of same length of pull.....
22" barreled singles same overall length as
18" pumps.
+/- ¼"

Ergo....like Dave says, leave it alone.

Very difficult to cut em off longer later.

Leave it as is. A cut-down barrel was what started the whole Randy Weaver/Ruby Ridge (insert description of choice here).
