Cutting a Rifle Barrel

How hard is it to make a 26 inch Rem 700 into a 20 inch? What would one expect to pay a gunsmith for a job like this? Any input appreciated.

I would probably pay whatever he asked me to pay.....since he is the one doing the work.

Sorry if this seems like a silly reply but I am in a slightly silly mood tonight.

Go to Brownells website and purchase a recrowning tool and do it yourself. A hacksaw, some cold blue, and a recrown tool are going to be the cheapest way to go. Just be sure to leave it legal length and cut it as close to square as possible, and it is a pretty easy job. You can always have a gunsmith fix it if you mess it up, but this is a very simple job really.

Typically, a good gunsmith will charge about $50-$75 for shortening a barrel. That would involve removing the barrel from the action, cutting to the desired length, recrowning (in a lathe), and reinstallation.

Something not to be overlooked is the labor intensive (if applicable) removal and re-installation of the front sight assembly.
