Customizing the S&W 4506

Howdy Folks!

Please allow me to tap this bottomless well of knowledge. I respect this message board more than any other.

I have S&W 4506 and I'm looking to set it up for either the .45 super or more likely the .450 SMC. (possible hunting and/or just cuz)

Does anyone know good websites where I can find information / products for building up the 4506? I'm looking for aftermarket springs and at what strength, the availability of shock buffs for the 4506?? etc.

It is my intention to beef this pistol up and add some custom features, but I dont know where to start or what options I have.

Ideas? comments?

That's an all-steel gun, right - not alloy-framed? If so, a heavier recoil spring should do it. Call Wolff Gunsprings and ask the tech guy there what he recommends. That's all it took with my old Ruger P97DC.

Sorry not much help but..

Might want to try posting at: www.smith-wessonforum.com in the semi-auto section. Not much traffic, but eventually you usually get some very knowledgable replies.

Relying solely on my extremly faulty memory I recall a magazine article years ago about one of the first "Ultra 45's" of some description. The maker had used a 4506 because he said it was the only 45 (at the time) that would stand up to the round so I'd assume your gun would be as good a starting point as any assuming higher power springs are available.

If you get into anything please post back, I'm very interested in this.

The Smigh & Wesson forum is a winner. As Blue Duck mentioned, it doesn't have the traffic of this one, but there are well-informed and thoughtful opinions and ideas just like here.

S&W 4506.

Brownells, I believe, sells shock buffs for the large-framed Smith autos.

As far as customizing goes, Novak's does extensive customizing of Smith autoloaders, including 10mms and 45s. Their work is superb, but it's usually geared toward LEO and civilian CCW-type modifications, rather than for hunting set-ups. However, they are good enough at 'smithing that you could probably engage them on a "special project" and have your 4506 modified to 450SMC for hunting use.

HTH. :)

Triton-Ammo makes the 450 SMC and have a tech help Email-address. I just dropped them a line to see if they had any ideas on this conversion and it's durability. I'll post back if I get anything from them.

Thanks all !

I currently have a post on the S&W forum awaiting more info.

I will post back with all the good stuff.

hey, if you get any info, drop a line here, please? I have a 4506 as well, and any drop in mods that can be done to it would be of interest to me.

Thanks,
Mike

Here's the response I got from Triton ammo concerning my request for info on the 450 SMC conversion. Great service, e-mailed me back the next day:

For the 4506 you will need a 18# spring. We utilize Wolff springs in all our firearms. The 4506 should hold up fine, we have one that we use for T&E.

Thanks Blue Duck!

You cut the chase...I finally got told at the S&W forum to contact Triton. If I hear any other interesting info I will be sure to post it here.

No problem BBALL, I've been getting interested in S/W autos recently and have one on the way (not the 4506 though :( ) and would love to see more discussion on them here.
