Customized SP101? What and Who?

What did you get done and who did the work? I'm thinking of getting some work done and am looking for some ideas I may have missed and a good smith to do the work.

Custom SP101

You can try to get in contact with the Custom Shop in Walworth, NY. They do custom SPs with adjustable sights, melted frame, trigger and action work and custom grips. Those I've seen have been great. I'm having them convert my 2.25" SP101 .357 Mag fixed sights to adjustable sights and do an action/trigger job. There phone number is (315) 936-1717. Hope this helps. By the way Jack Weigands (sorry for the spelling) is top of the line but he doesn't do adjustable sights and is backlogged. Good Shooting....RW ;)

Backlog

Hey guys thanks for the plug. We are a bit behind but I don't think much more than most. We are quoting 4 months for delivery as of today.

Another plug for Jack Weigand

Here is a link to my report re my Weigand Customized SP101 (which I wrote as soon as I received it and fired a cylinder full of .357 Silvertips. Since writing this report, I have done a lot of shooting with the Weigand SP101, and the more I shoot it, the better I like it):

http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64672&highlight=Weigand+SP101

Since writing that review, I have suffered a couple of deteriorations in terms of physical problems, which have made carrying the weight of the SP101 for CCW purposes problematic for me. But I still love to shoot the SP101, and if I can figure a way to do it comfortably, it will be my primary CCW gun.

Ravenwolf,

Did you finally get your SP-101 back, complete with its new adjustable sights? Any possibility of pics?

We do but....

Hey guys,

We do have a web site, www.jackweigand.com but the Pistolsmithing section is blocked. I am not accepting any work at the moment. Dave Arnold of Handguns magazine has just done an article on or SP-101 package and it will be out in the September issue. I am going to make a decision soon if we will be accepting any new orders. I think what will happen is that I may build a few SPs' a year but not much more than that.

Her is the link to the SP page that is not listed on the web at the moment.

As many of you know I was having some health problems but that has gotten much better in the past months. The problem were not life threatening by the way, just a problem, LOL!

Jack,
Ive ooohed, aaaahed and such over your SP's for a while. I got a clean one owner lot to long ago and have a good smith locally. Id glady send you my gun..but would go thru seperation anxiety! :D Thats if your taking new guns, which I hope you dont stop personally! Anyway..what do you recommend having done to an SP for primarily a CCW? Just curious.
Im glad your health is improving, as Im sure many others are here also. Keep up the killer smith work....
Shoot well

Thanks!

Eric,
I actually prefer new guns or guns with a box or two of ammo shot through them. The cool thing about doing older guns is the vast improvement in appearance and feel after they are finished.

As far as the SP and CCW they are great guns, especially the 2" version. We do about 90% 2" and 10% 3". The ONLY advantage in the 3" is sight radius. The velocity differential is negligible. I have found accuracy of both revolvers to be indistinguishable.

OK now that I stirred the pot, LOL! I have been doing the SP since it came only in .38 Special and I know what I am talking about.

Jack,
I wont say a word about the 2-3" barrel thing. Ive shot a 3" rental and it was a nice gun also. My little SP came with a CTC
Laser grip and trust me!, I learned just how accurate a 2 1/4" barrel can be :D Take away the short sight radius and HOLY CRAP! Amazing.
While talking to my smith...we discussed the "stuff to do and what I wanted"......
I had him do the following...

Round the trigger and polish
Chamfer the cylinder holes for speed loader assistance
Trigger job....hes got a couple hes done and they are nice.
Check action and tweak as needed
Break the sharp corner on the hammer and polish the edge
Install Trijicon night front sight
Cut 15-18 deg on forcing cone.

How does this sound? I wont even compare his work to yours!
You are the proffessed and sworn master of SP's as far as Im concerned......the truth is I would gladly send you my guns, all of them, but I am down to a few for carry and the turn around time is the deciding factor. The seperation anxiety thing....LOL

There maybe a "new in box Weigand SP" in my future! Do you have them ready to ship or do you tweak them after you get the order? Id like everything but the bobbed trigger....EVERYTHING :D
Again ....just curious....

Shoot well, Eric

The list looks good!

Eric,
That is a good list. As far as new in the box SPs' I believe that is the way we are going to go in the future. I will build them as I have time and list them on our web as they are available. This way I am not held to a schedule or keeping anyone's gun for 6 months or better. Believe it or not Pistolsmiths don't want to keep your guns any longer than necessary. Good luck with you SP!

God Bless

Mr. Weigand!

I have to apologize in advance for appearing a bit selfish but I am motivated from personal experience and out of sincere merit. First, I am wholly happy that your health is improving and hope that you return to your fullest level of vigor. Currently, I am wrestling with a tumor in my hip and know all to well how frail our human structure can become. Further, when that happens, as you know, your views of quality of life and priorities dramatically change.

But, in the trite but appropriate vernacular, "You be da' man!" insofar as your SP-101 expertise is unsurpassed. I hope that you will consider continuing piecemeal from some of us who know well the benefit of patience and appreciation. Although your Beast Tamer package is extraordinary, many of us may simply wish for a great trigger job or to swap a barrel, etc, ad infinitum. A craftsman is always preferable to a technician as artistry never occurs by accident.

In closing, on behalf of my shooting fraternity, I sincerely thank you for your longstanding commitment to serve our shooting/gunsmithing needs. Few know of your personal sacrifice but all are benefited. Thank you.

Doc,
Thank you and I will keep you in my prayers. My problems have all been stress related. I am one of those guys that wants everyone to be happy with our work and service. When I got so far behind there were those that were not happy. I have, up to this point, usually delivered on time. I always get a few customers that I quote 6 months and after 6 weeks they start calling and complaining. I am afraid I just let that get to me. Being a Pistolsmith is not as easy as it seems. Gun companies are putting out so much rubbish and half fitted guns it takes twice as much time to build a custom gun these days. S&W and all of their MIM stuff, someone should slap them. They have taken the standard in the industry and brought it down to a much lesser quality firearm.

There my first rant, LOL! I must be getting better, LOL! Again thanks for the concern.

God Bless
Jack Weigand

Mr. Weigand,

You're among friends here and I'll bet that if it helps your health and lowers your stress level no one would mind the occasional rant for therapy.

Rick

Jack....

I strongly concur with Rick R that a bit of ranting might actually be good for the constitution. And, rant all you desire as I long for you (and me) to perhaps die of an overly strong constitution! I have found my own problem to be quite an eye opener. By in large, we are consumed with an ignorant and selfish populace. There are just too many Walter Mitty, armchair theorists, hoping for some self-designed Utopia, those who demand a Rembrandt (your exquisite work) on a Kmart budget and a New York time frame. Many of us, especially those who vend professional services or skills to the public at large, know all too well the type, those that think a french curve is a bad Parisian U-turn while the direct you to the tasks. So, I say all that to say this. Relax. You are among appreciative friends. You do whatever suits you because, we are empathetic and it suits us right down to the ground so long as you remain happy and prosperous.

Docbones:)

Jack, Doc and all,
Man oh Man...can I concur or what! Im a salesman...some...er. most of my customers are BIG INDUSTRY! If they go "down", they call me and they are losing up to $250,000.00 an hour in production costs alone...... Welcome to sales....LOL.
Jack, I am the same type of personality as you...I take my job/customers needs personally...not really a bad thing unless you take it to the extreme. After literally years, Ive come to find
that my customers really dont need my stress level where I put it...."all in the name of their needs". It honestly just detracts from things at times....actually turning into a negative thing, mostly for me directly. Doc is right...you are the best at what you do and most people want everything now! This is not a good thing at times.....I say if they want your services they have to wait just like everyone else or too bad!
Strange but true analogy....there is a little burger place at the mouth of a highly travelled canyon in UT. The are the best at what they do in their area. They have a very large sign at the counter that states "Everything we make here is from scratch and made just for you at the time of your order. This way of business takes time. Most who come here and eat understand our way of doing things. If you are in a hurry, we appreciate you stopping by and recommend you go somewhere else. Thank you"
I think that says it all.....
You can vent all you want here.....trust me...I think Ive done enough for every member here at times :D
God Bless and shoot well, Eric

P.S. Jack I got my gun back last night.....:D :D :D Very nice.....
Ill post a pic of the mods later today...just for those who are curious...god bless.
