Nosler guy

New member
The goal is Oregon black bear and their main concern was velocity. The rifle is a new Savage with a light sport 22" bang pipe. The components are nos 165 ab, annealed fed gold dot match brass sorted to .5 gn tol, AR comp powder and cci br2 primers.

My magneto speed fell apart so I had to send the rifle to the cave to get the final stats, which were 1800 fps with an es of 17 and a 5 shot group at 3/4"

Not to shabby for a short pipe and low capacity cases. No extractor marks but heavy bolt lift after 3 firings. I can't remember exactly what it was but I had a single digits es with ar comp in a ten shot string over the magnetospeed in a gas .556 and excellent accuracy. The more I use it the more I like it.

2800fps with a 165gr is top end .308 Win from a 22" tube. (allowing for individual rifle differences) If you aren't at industry max pressures already, you are pretty close.

22" is considered "standard" length for the .308 Win.

heavy bolt lift after 3 firings.

Do you mean the rifle gets a heavy bolt lift after firing 3 shots? Or the bolt lift gets heavy firing the third reloading of an individual case???

If your rifle is shooting 3/4" groups, ES is rather immaterial.

Sub MOA with a suitable hunting bullet is more than enough for bear hunting. Improvements on that, which might matter on the target range won't matter at all to the bear.

Good Luck!

When I was younger I bought a Sako Finnbear Deluxe in 300 Win Mag for bear hunts. I started looking for a good guide service and then thought why would I want to kill a bear? I'm not going to eat bear meat.. I don't need a rug...

By the way, that Sako kicked like mule (ouch) and was super accurate.

Glad you're getting 2800' ps with the 165.. Good Luck killing that bear.
You can have the bragging rights. lol

I had a Finn Bear in 7mm mag and in 223 and a 338mag. With the 7mag and the 338 mag I had to shoot a lot to handle the recoil. Beautiful gun's though and very accurate.

I really like the 308, used one for everything for a lot of years. Never shot a black bear with one though. Used to go up a river south of Anchorage a ways And always carried that 308 for bear. Caught a lot of fish but never saw a bear. For the most part I've used 165gr bullet in a 308 all my life. For thse trip's it was loaded with 200gr bullet's. Little bar where we;d fish. I went over there one time and found a huge bear track. For a black bear I'd stick with the 165 gr bullet. Seldom hunt with the 308 anymore. My son has the old one and I've got a 788 in 308 that I fool with cast bullet's with.

I've never gotten over 2750-2760 with 165's and a 22" barrel. I'm thinking you may do a little better to back off some. The 50 fps or so will never be noticed and I'd not want to have an ejection issue if another round is needed quickly.

I've always used 150-165's in my 308, but recently tried some 178-180 gr loads at about 2650 fps. They only drop about 1-3" more at 400 yards, but hit a lot harder than the lighter bullets.

I'd have no issue hunting anything with a 308 that I'd hunt with a 30-06

It will vary, slightly, but with the usual pointed bullets, in .30cal, 100fps difference in MV equals approximately 1/2" more drop, proportional per hundred yards.

It does get a little different, when you get way out there, but mostly due to different bullets (weight) retaining velocity differently.

Just wanted to share another successful load with ar comp powder. I was pretty skeptical a few years back when first trying it out because of the trendy name but it's been great for me in every application thus far.

It's not my rifle and he
wanted speed, so I found a load that's a bit hot but doesn't cause any issues until some moderately heavy bolt lift after 3 reloadings on the neck sized brass, after which gets fl sized and ff with pistol powder. So far the brass has had 2 of these cycles with annealing. He apparently will be hunting spring bear this year.

As far as es and sd's, they won't matter much to him with a maximum shot range being a few hundred yards other than a piece of mind knowing that the load is very consistent. Some folks might gain something here if they are looking for a long range load.
