Custom work advice...

I have an old S&W mod 37 that is near and dear to my heart. It was my grandfather's service revolver. I want to have some work done on it, (trigger job and new bobbed hammer). I want it primarily for pocket carry. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Why not send it to the people who made it?

S&W runs a VERY competent custom shop that offers trigger work, refinishing, and anything else you might want.

Pricing is competetive, and turn-around is usually faster than other shops.

See their web site for details.

Whoa! I suggest you save ALL the OEM parts. Have only new parts installed and modified. Unmolested S&W OEM parts are almost impossible to find for older S&Ws. I suggest you keep the original parts for future use. S&W will rebuild and perform custom modifications. I simply believe that you should preserve all of the OEM parts, including the screws.

I would leave Granddad's gun just as he used it since it's near and dear to you and get another to modify.

Sir W. & Majic

Thanks for the thoughts, that actually was my original idea, (to save all the OEM parts). But after thinking more about this I have to agree with you. It would probably make much more sense to pick up a newer 638 or 642.

You can buy a used 637 for not too much, especially if the finish is worn. You are going to customize it anyway. Robar it or hard chrome.

Yup, keep your monkey mits off the family heirlooms. you'll be glad you did besides, you can carry and abuse a different gun and have two heirlooms to hand down to the next generation. :D

Another vote to leave grandpa's gun alone. If you alter it in anyway, it's not his original gun. Would you shorten the arm on the statue of liberty? I don't think so.

Good advice from all. I'm going out tomorrow to order a 642, a local dealer gave me a great price. The old model 37 is going back in the case next to gramp's Colt Official Police. ;)

I was in your shoes recently in regards to a S&W Model 10 (2") and a Series 70 Colt Combat Commander.

I decided to leave both unmolested and secure additional pistols for modification.

Wisest decision I ever made.

both

I think you can talk to the custom folks at S&W and probably get them to save your old parts and custom fit new internals for you...that way, it may be possible to have grand-dad's gun all new and slick AND to be able to restore it to original form...just an idea. as for general custom work on S&W..I'd recommend you get Mr. Kuhnhausen's S&W manual from brownells as a good start.
