Custom rifle or not???

New to the forum so I hope I'm in the right place. I purchased a model '94 Winchester several years ago in 44-40, but I have been unable to ascertain who actually built the rifle. Serial number is in the right place #V726xx, case hardened receiver, all wood is in great condition circa early to mid 1900s. I just have not been able to identify the manufacturer of the receiver. Great shooter and lots of fun. Winchester says they never made the rifle but the barrel is definitely a Winchester mod '94 44-40 cal. Any ideas as to where I need to look next?

There was a Spanish copy of the Model 92, but never a copy of the Model 94 outside of Winchester that I'm aware of during the pre-Miroku days.
Model 94 was never made in handgun calibers till the later days of USRAC, to the best of my knowledge.

Pictures needed.
Exactly what barrel markings does it have?

custom rifle or not

My pictures are taking up to much space for the forum. Any ideas, they average 1.2 - 1.5 mb. I've tried to change format but didn't work.

While waiting for photo help, can you post ALL markings on the barrel?

It clearly says Model 1894 and .44-40 on it?

Go out to the main list of all forums. At the bottom is forum tech support. There is a sticky thread that explains how to load pictures that are too large.

You said the barrel was definetly a winchester, but your not sure about the gun, so maybe it was some clone built many years ago and they just put a winchester barrel on it. If by custom you mean for long range precision shooting or accuracy, I would think not Becuase if your custom building a gun you wouldn't use the factory barrel. My guess would be some sort of clone. But, like others said, pictures are great. Once you figure out how to get them up, do so and we will try to help you the best we can.

Why don't you set up a photobucket account and paste in the link to your photos. Make sure the album isn't private so people can see the pictures.

Winchester didn't use a V prefix and Winchester didn't make a 94 in 44-40 until much later, methinks sometime in the 80's. Sears sold Winchester 94's marked as Ted Williams with a V prefix so somebody probably replaced the Ted Williams marked barrel with a Winchester marked one.
