Looking to buy a Remington 700 in .308 of some kind. What all should I have done to it to maximize its shooting distance capabilities? What stock, barrel, etc? Anything you can think of would be great. Thanks guys.

Loaded question, how much do you want to spend and what optic are you going to be using? Also, are you reloading your own ammo?

I have a R700 5R. Love it. It's stock except a badger ordnance box magazine. Capabilities all depend on how well you shoot etc. I use mine at 600 plus yards a lot. Then 1000 and to a mile. At a mile it's difficult but doable.

I'm looking to spend around $1300. I do not handload currently. I also do not have an optic yet. I'm starting from scratch.

$1300 total for rifle and optic or just the rifle? You can buy a Sendero for $1100-$1200, and they are good longer range rifles right from the box. You could buy a 700 PSS for $900-ish and shoot it as-is for a while. What do you want to do? Starting out at 100-200 yds, eventually moving out to 300, 400, 500, etc, as your skills increase. When you get to 600 yds, have it rebarreled and keep going until you reach 1,000 yds.

At 477 yards in Oct 2013 I shot a buck exactly on the shoulder where I was aiming with that rifle.

I wrote an email to Darrell Holland about the distance between centers [that looked like between 0.605 and 0.608" for me to drill my receiver to pin his newer thicker recoil lug. I was replacing the old ragged rusty recoil lug. I got an answer in 5 minutes.

Do not forget to square the action if you keep the Remington barrel. If you re-barrel, I like Douglas premium barrels, but I know lots of folks who have other preferences.

Skywag - I bought a PTG Win Type 70 swing type safety for a Rem 700. I've yet to install it. Yep, I'm lazy. :p I should install it on the 700 I blueprinted.

Clark... Did you do all your own work to the gun? Great shot and great gun.

Yes, but I failed at making a recoil lug. I have a little thickness run out. So I bought an after market recoil lug.
