"Custom" question?

I want a "base" Shotgun to build up to my own "custom" defense weapon.
Is the mossberg the way to go (Remmington someday but on budget:( ).
There are so many accessories for them but i was thinking a base 500
(6-shot) synthetic or the 590 to start with. 500's are dirt cheap where i live $150 used,so I guess my question is what is reliability/durability ,Is this gonna be worth my time?I want to hear from people who have done this,

if your going for a used gun why not get a used remmington?


i got my remington super mag in excellent cond for 200.


all the smitthys i talked to said a used remington over a new mossberg.

870 --- period, I passed on a dirt cheap no wear 870 that I could have built up for around 200 --- it got snapped up quick --- by somone building up a gun as you plan to do or as I would have liked to do..

Mossberg in my opinion is great. You can get a 500A very cheap, with an 8 shot mag and it will take any stock or accessory you want to put on it.
 
If you want a base gun that can be built up any way you want, the Remington 870 is the best option.

ANY accessory that's made for shotguns is made for the 870.
The Mossberg is limited as to just what can be done in some cases.
As example, you buy the Mossberg already equipped with either a standard or extended magazine.
You cannot change from one to the other due to the barrel mounting system.

Used 870's can usually be found cheap, and even the Express model is essentially the same gun as the top-of-the-line 870P Police guns.

The Mossberg Model 500 is not even close to the Model 590-A1 Military and Police model.
 
A used, short barrelled 870 or 500 is a fine weapon sans bellsnwhistles. Spend the money on ammo, range fees and maybe even a lesson or two.

Once you're proficient, you're in a better position to know what will aid performance and what is just bling....
 
If you are going to put money into a shotgun, why would you be looking at the cheapest gun available. I have no problem with Mossbergs, but they ain't cheap because they have tons of quality and great fit and finish. Why do you think Remington sells more 870 than Masberg sell their stuff. If you are all about cost, go for the Mossberg, personally, I have never owned one, I doubt I will as long as Remington and Ithaca make shotguns.
