Custom .257 Roberts by Flaig...

I've been a member for about 2 years and finally had a good enough reason to post. I was given (I know, lucky SOB!) a 1972 custom .257 Roberts by Flaig and wanted to get some input from anyone who's in the know. I'm not a hunter, but will be now! :) Thinking of doing some hog, varmit and/or deer hunting and wanted some thoughts on this rifle. Also, I have no idea what it's worth. Might have to up my insurance a bit??? Thanks to all!

Douglas Premium Barrel 24"
Timney Trigger
Winchester Style Safety
Cartridge Trap in butt
O.D. Rings is Leupold VariX III 1.5 to 5
Fitted case by Messina, NY.

Ok, pics uploaded. BTW, ran across a dealer card wedged in the case with retail price @$2295 in the yr 1999. I imagine that would be the high for that period.

Flaig stuff is pretty but doesn't appear to demand big money. There are as few on the assorted auction sites at decidedly unremarkable prices. $400 to $600 depending on the chambering and the stock. .257's seem to run at the higher end.
If you opt to hunt pig with it, make sure you use the right bullet. No varmint bullets, period. It's about the bullet, not the cartridge. Varmint bullets do not penetrate enough. They expand rapidly upon impact. A deer bullet will do nicely though.

Hard to tell much from the pictures posted, but it appears to be a nicely finished rifle built on a 1909 Mauser action from the Argentine contract. The 1909 action is/was quite sought after for custom builds because of its magazine floorplate release, which was mounted in the triggerguard. More pics would be useful, but from what I can see, you have acquired a very nice custom Mauser. One thing is for sure--they don't make them like that anymore. Congratulations on a magnificent Mauser!

I can't help you on what it's worth but from what I could see of it in the pictures it looks to be a very fine classy rifle.

I would bet that custom case and accessories would cost a couple of hundred or more if they were ordered built today.

I would love to see more pictures especially if you can show all the gun in some pictures, really good eye candy.

I've never hunted hogs so I can't help you there but the 257 Roberts is an outstanding deer cartridge, a friend of mine has one and loves it.

Best Regards
Bob Hunter
