Curious...age of a Model 36

I was given this little gun years ago by my (then) father-in-law. It's very nice (98%) but just too small to shoot without the larger girips (shown in the photo).

I'd like to find out the gun's age. Here is the S/N.
186xx

I does have "Mod 36" stamped inside the yoke.

Thanks so much!

Thank you...

Tamara,
Here is another photo. I do not believe this unit
would be called a "flat-latch"...but I'm pretty ignorant
so I'll leave that up to you.

Erich,
Thanks. A friend gave me the "target"? grips that are
now on the gun. It's a lot easier to shoot now.

Hmm. Nope, that's not a flat-latch on there.

I'll bet those big grips make it pretty sweet to shoot.

well, I goofed (not the first or last time either)...

Sorry Tamara & Erich,
When I posted this yesterday I unintentionally used the yoke # and should have taken the butt number...I knew better too but had logged the yoke number in my "gun listing" a long time ago (pre-brain usage).
Here is the correct s/n off the gun's butt: 607709
Better? I apologize for wasting your time yesterday with the misinformation.

Thanks.

A call to Smith & Wesson will get you the date of mfg, they are very good about that. Or an E Mail would work also, I have used both in the past. I have a Model 37 that I really like, fits real good in a pocket holster, I bobbed the hammer for pocket carry.

That resolves to a late '60s date. 1962 commenced with 295000 and 1969 commenced with 786544, and that's as close as the S/N info in the Standard Catalog will get us. However, it doesn't have a flat latch, which was discontinued in 1966, so that helps narrow it down. If you need to get closer than "about '67-'68", call Smith, as advised above. They even have humans answering the phone; a novelty these days! :)

Model 36

You know the 36 CHIEF I bought new in 64-65 is a flat latch.
still have box & clean stuff still in sealed bag.SN # 270xxx.It's been my little
carry gun all these years.seem I paid 65.00 then.

Thanks again!

I appreciate the help and patience with me.
I'll probably give S&W a call Monday.

Have a terrific weekend everyone!!

I finally made the call to S&W Customer Service...

Very nice folks! Cheerful!

The gentleman told me this gun was manufactured in October of 1968.

Thanks everyone for all your assistance.
