Curious? about 410

I'm wondering if anyone has ever used IMR 4198 for a 410 3-inch? I recently ran across some really unique recipes in an old Lyman's Shotshell Handbook. (third edition) Also, does anyone have an (old) listing of Mec's bushing chart they could spare? Their (Mec's) current chart I've found to be quite selective on powders "they've decided to post." To be honest, I really don't want to run out and buy a Universal Bar if I don't have too. The recipe I have calls for 25grs. of IMR-4198. I wish I knew which Mec # bushing would get me close or dead on? Happy New Year to all.

Curious about the 410?

Thanks for the offer of {IMR Handloaders Guide} I've got a few of those here the earliest one I have is dated 1983. Like the one shown on your thread mine too even being as old as it is, only offers recipes for the use of 4227 as its only powder charge for the 410. Thanks for the effort of trying to help. It is much appreciated on this end. By the way I just loaded up some 3" 410s with H-110 and #6 this afternoon to go bunny hunting this coming weekend with. My dog is getting a bare spot from sitting around here on his butt and so am I. We both are looking forward to our trip together Told the dog you want to go get some bunny's!!!-> and his tail is "wagging to beat the band now." He'll be my best Buddy for the rest of the week now. :D >To bad for wifee!!< :p

While having coffee this morning, I was speaking with the guys at Hodgdon's. I ask about the 4198 powder. They said that probably the old data was not a good choice for 410 rounds. There is old 4198 powder which I believe in a 410 round was pretty temp sensitive (Internet advice for what its worth) in cold weather and the newer 4198 which has additives that improve's this but takes it out of the ball park for 410 rounds. Hodgdon's actually said they would not use it in a shotshell. I think (?) I have a chart for this but My wife and I have filed my data in one of three buildings since the move. The old data is not in the reloading room. I will try to find it over the next couple of days but no guarantees.

Curious about the 410?

Hey thanks olddrum for the look see? and info from the boys over at Hodgdon. As I recall I had a Bushing list years ago back in the early eighties from Mec that I passed to the new owner of a used Jr. press I sold back then. It gave us shot shell reloaders all the current powders at the time that were considered propellant the ability to load just about anything shot shell, rifle, pistol acceptable. The reloader had to be smart enough to determine which powder was acceptable for use in his application though? Alcan was one powder at that time and on that list too. {when still available.} with its dual application: a Great!! powder for pistols and shot shells alike. Now in order to get where you want to be using the old shot shell recipes? One has to Scale most if not all powder selections around and a-bit under a #7 bushing or over the #48 and/or use a Universal Bar and again call the powder companies for advice whether it can or cannot still be used? The only safe experimentation going on with different powers for shot shell loads that I know of currently? come from a business located in Corcoran, Minnesota called Ballistic Products. Thanks again Olddrum. Sure Shot Mc Gee.

Ops? sorry about that Mr. Chris in VA. I guess I made a mistake in what Forum Column I should have posted my question. I'll be more careful in the future.

SSM, I went through about ten stored boxes and did not find the manuals I was looking for. I am not saying its a lost cause but, crap, I'm pretty sure thats what I am saying. If I find it I will IM you.
Charlie.

Curious about the 410?

Hey thanks for the welcome Mr. Olddrum1. And thanks again for looking thru those 10 boxes for that lost material to help answer my question. No need to apologize for language short comings either, as I didn't read anything wrote in your thread that could be offensive to me. By the way, my bunny hunt weekend with my bald butt Pooch went very well. Pooch He got a good work-out. And I got more than a couple of meals of skillet Creamed Rabbit. Both the dog and my Iver Johnson single 410 never skipped a beat. To bad I can't say the same for my aim. I have to say Olddrum1. It seems like "those Bunny's get quicker every year out in my woods!" But we managed to slim the herd by a few, all the same.

Curious about the 410

Thanks for the info Zippy13.-- By the way I've recently decided that old Lyman 3rd edition reloaders hand book I have. It's probably best that I retire it for reading material on evenings when the TV doesn't appeal to me. Although it sure had some nifty recipes listed. But as Olddrum1 kind of suggested that using such old reloading recipes were not suggested by his friend or friends at a powder manufacture. So it seems its best that I do that. By the way Olddrum1 I too did inherit a IJ single from my father in 28 ga. Don't use it to much as it developed a pretty nasty crack in its stock over the years. So its a closet shotgun till I get my hands on a new/used decent stock for it. I always thought a person could swap barrels on those small gauge IJ shotguns? But as I found out after I purchased my 410. There is a difference between the newer models versus the older ones with those slivered small forearms. {The receivers are machined a little differently on the slivered forearm models.} Well that's it gentlemen. Thanks, for all your reply's and guidance to my thread, it surely was appreciated. tom
