Curio and Relic FFL

Any of you folks have a C&R license. I have been kicking around getting one to save a few bucks on parts. Also I have gotten the surplus Mauser rehab bug.

I know about the requirement to maintain a bound book and all that. I am simple wondering is it worth it to get on another government list?

So if there are any C&R types out there, send me you good and bad stories about it. I'm particularly interested in how the ATF deals with you. Any unannounced visits in the middle of the night?

Thanks,

I have one. I have used it several times now with no problems. Have never had any problems with the ATF. Any questions that I have had has always been answered promptly and politely. No in the middle of the night inspections. I've had the license for some years now and only really started to use it.
I don't think they are going to bust ass on a C&R holder unless a red flag pops up. I do everything that has been required of me in maintaining the license. I'd go for it. I believe its worth it and I have obtained some worthwhile pieces with it.

Hope this helps :)

Joe,
After nearly a week, I'm still waiting for
the BATF office in Atlanta to call me back so I can tell them that I want an application for a C&R license.
I've been told that the long wait begins once you've filed.
But I'm waiting for them on the front end, too!
Grrr...
Hope you have better luck...

EOD Guy,

Thanks, I'll do that - 'cause they STILL haven't called me back!

It took them a week to cash my check and 45 days to process my application. But it was well worth the wait. No NICs, no 7 day wait, and no gun locks. Now if Empire Arms would just ship the CZ50 I ordered I would be a happy camper.

Just out of curiosity what is involved in getting an FFL license. I sent off to the BATF for a packet and got a huge pile of paperwork sent to me. My questions are how much money does it cost to get the FFL? What is the process that I need to do to go about getting it?

What qualifies a weapon to fall into the C & R category? I checked the ATF site and could find no mention of the qualifications there. Does anyone know of a list of "ATF-approved" C & R weapons?

JBP,

Boy, have you struck a nerve!
Between attending various gunshows, minor surgery, and finally finding a pistol that functioned properly (?) - I didn't think Mr. Kroh would ever find the time to take care of his business and my order.
Strange how everyone that I have spoken to or swapped e-mails with (until now), has nothing but the highest praise about him: the quality of his wares, service, and reputation.
Hmmm...

BTW, I did get my pistol.
But my local gunsmith still is trying to get the decocker to work.
And yes, he concurred that I have it looked at, after I e-mailed him about the problem.
He offered me no other options.

Hope you have better luck...

cwalker3,

Go back to the atf site, click on firearms in the left column and when that page comes up, click on curios/relics in the header. That will get the curios and relics lists.

cwalker3,

Basically, a C&R gun is any gun that is deemed collectable. It is usually over 50 years old or a comemorative. On the BATF list, it has many guns that are rare collectors pieces. Unless you are into these high priced guns, you'll prob end up looking at a lot of military guns. Many of us are WWI and WWII collectors.

Go to: www.mosin-nagant.net for a BUNCH of info on C&R military guns. Or www.gunandknife.com if you have very specific questions on a military gun. From these two sites you can link to sites with info about just about any military rifle.

Be sure to send your FFL to Brownells and MidwayUSA to get dealer prices!

Thanks for the info. I'm still undecided about applying for the license. I just don't know if I want my name on another government list.

I had the same reservation, but then I figured I was on a whole bunch of them anyway. ;)
