Cult of the 10mm?

I have been in the market for a new pistol for some time now. In
the past, I have tried everything from H&K USP's to Beretta's to
CZ's; 9's and .40's and .45's (and lions and tigers and bears, oh
my!). But except for a friend's Delta Elite, I have very little experience with the 10mm Automatic. In reference to another
thread (10mm Witness), is there a dedicated group of 10mm
buffs out there? Perhaps I'm looking for something other than
the standard-issue 9/40/45 (i.e., something no one else has),
or I've spent too much time trying to figure out what Don
Johnson was packing in the first season of Miami Vice (I did,
by the way- Bren Ten, and it looked a lot like a Witness), but
the 10mm has gotten my attention.

Any feedback?

I don't know how dedicated I am, but I like my Delta Elite very much. I bought it on the day it was announced Colt wasn't going to sell to the public any more. What was that, almost two years ago? I though I might never have a chance to buy another Colt, and the shop had only the one. It is a good-shooting gun; accurate enough for me, and quite reliable. Because the brass isn't very plentiful (cheap), and there are relatively few guns chambered for it, the 10mm cartridge will always remain something of a cult round. I might trade my Delta for a .45, but I'd rather have it than any of the auto pistols/rounds that have come since (9x23, .40, .357 SIG, etc.).

If you want the best autopistol caliber, get 10mm Auto. If you want to be a sheepie and have what everyone else has, get something like .40 Short & Weak. :p

Note: that was a joke. But I really do like 10mm. In fact, it is the only pistol caliber I own (Delta Elite, S&W 610 and Glock 20C). In my OPINION it is the best autopistol caliber there is and some of the best guns made are chambered for it.

BTW Cor-Bon is selling a limited run of 180gr JHP @ no-kidding 1300 FPS. E-mail them for details.

If I could have only one centerfire for handguns, it would be the 10 mm. I shoot a Glock 20 and 29 every week. Shop around some and you can find better prices. Last gun show I went to, I got ten boxes (50 per) of 10 mm Blazer 200 gr for $10.00 per box!
Great cartridge!
:D

FTR - Don Johnson in Miami Vice carried a proto-type 45 ACP HK P7. A squeeze cocker at least in many of the episodes. HK is very proud of that.

And if you're talking 10mm, GlockTalk has a forum set up for 10mm shooters and a good 100 plus active posters.

The best all around 10mm handgun is the Glock 20. Self defense, competitions, target work, and hunting.

BUT you must reload or you will have to wait in the mail for your ammo unless your local dealer is willing to regulalry order it for you.

Bullets from 135 to 220 grainers. So you have a range covering 9mm up to 45 ACP.

I reload lead bullets at $3.75 a box or FMJ for about $5 a box. Same as 45 ACP costs.

Glock 20, can shoot 40SW and 357 SIG
Colt Delta Elite for the 1911 crowd, but you feel the full force of 10mm recoil with it.
EAA Witness, good value steel gun
SW 610 revolver for the hottest hunting loads or target loads where you only use 3.0 grains of powder
Star Megastar if you want the tank and accurate too.

Even a couple of carbines out there.

But if you canonly have one, G20. Love my SW 610 too!

ANM, I felt the same draw to get something different a while back, between that and TNN airing re runs of Miami Vice my fate was sealed (BTW the Bren used in the first 2 seasons had the slide electroless nickle plated and was actually chambered for .45ACP blanks. Of course the gun he switched to was a S&W 645, I never figured out why? ;) ). Since I can`t afford a Bren 10,and I always wanted a 10mm I went for a Wonderfinished (silver tennifer) Witness 10mm fullsized. The gun is a great deal for the money and 10mm is a blast. I can`t help but grin every time I blast through a clip of Corbons or other full house loads. :D FWIW I put in an order to stock up on those 180gr.JHP/ 1300fps Corbons too,oh baby! All I`ve done to it is swap in a Wolff 20# recoil spring. SUre the 10mm is a little more expensive to shoot than say 9mm,but so is a .45ACP and the 10 is a lot more fun IMO. Personally I think it`s also right on the edge of the max power round for personal defense. Anything hotter moves into the magnum hunting round zone and starts getting hairy to control. Hot 10mm loads in my Witness are still very controlable in rapid fire if I manhandle it. I say go for it and try a 10mm. If you want the CZ clone/Miami Vice type go for the Witness. If you want a good 10mm "shooting appliance" pick up a Glock 20/29. Either way you can`t go wrong. Marcus

If everyone buys one, maybe we can resurrect interest????

I have owned a Delta Elite and S&W 1076. Unfortunately, the cost of factory loads resulted in their sale and switching to 45acp. Wish I had them back. That was before my reloading days. Reloading just makes so much sense! I have a Witness FS in Wonderfinish on order now. Would love another Delta Elite (1911 fan) but can't stomach the average price of $800. Considered a Springfield Armory 40S&W for conversion, but the price ramped up quickly. The Witness will fulfill the imediate need. Still plan to build a 1911 10mm in the near (hopefully not distant) future. Still remember the old days of shooting at indoor ranges. I'd fire my 45 until someone shot something louder....then the Delta came out of it's case. 10mm is a blast to shoot and very accurate in my opinion. Get yourself one!

For those who miss out on the Corbons, keep in mind that Pro- Load, loads a 180 gr. Gold Dot @ 1200 fps, a 155 gr. Gold Dot @ 1350 fps, and a 135 gr. Nosler @ 1440 fps. Not as hot as the Corbon, but a "Full Load" by any measure.
