cross hair looks twisted?

I was having my wife look through a couple scope options to put on the gun she's hunting with and when I looked through my Nikon Buckmaster the left horizontal crosshair looked twisted or maybe ruffled when the sun was shining into my face. Anyone else had this before? Since I try to avoid hunting while staring into the sun it hadn't been an issue before and I didn't notice it even though I hunted with it alot last year. It looks right any other time. Should I send it back or leave it?

If it looks right when not looking at the sun then why worry?

Also, it’s never good to look at the sun through any type of scope. That is one of the two ways of going blind.

not directly at the sun I meant generally in the direction of the sun. I've never had much desire to see the sun at 9x.

The crosshairs are made of a strip of metal. To get the thinner section in the center of the Duplex type of crosshairs common on most all scopes the metal strip is twisted 90 degrees. This allows the thinner edge to be visible in the center of the scope and the thicker edge is visible on the rest. If light hits it just right it is possible to notice this on many scopes. Look very closely at the point where the crosshairs taper down and you can see this.

It shouldn't be ruffled. If it is working I probably wouldn't worry about it, but a call to Nikon wouldn't hurt.

thanks jmr40. That's good information that I wasn't aware of. I'll give them a call but I'm thinking I'll leave it alone if it isn't going to lead to a failure in the field and isn't usually noticeable.

Clay,

That second way of going blind ain't true. . .

It made me need contacts though :o. :p

I'd imagine your scope is probably fine, as long as the anomaly isn't there when you are looking through it under normal lighting conditions.
