Crkt Rant

I recently purchased a CRKT M16-13Z for EDC. How the heck do you keep these things from rusting, I carried it 2 days and the metal under the holes on the handle started rusting. What gives I have carbon steel that don't rust as easy as this crap. I used a qtip with CLP and after a weeks they started getting brown spots again. What is the deal I just wanted a nice EDC with a flipper but got a rust bucket with a flipper.

Yep, my M16-z12 does the same thing - otherwise it's a pretty good knife. I would suggest either a Kershaw Leek, or a CRKT Desert Cruiser as good and good looking flipper knives that won't break the bank, and won't rust. The Desert Cruiser has a titanium nitride blade coating, and uses the same lawks locking system as the M16s:

The Leek is a flipper, and an AO, so it's very fast. It can be had in many configs, with all-steel, steel-liner with alum handles, even one with a S30V blade and G10 handles!

BreakFree CLP. Coat it good and let it sit for a good 10 or 15 minutes. That will allow the CLP to soak into the microscopic pores. After that you should be good. Do this every six months to a year and you should be good to go.

There is no way to get around it. Cheap stainless steel rusts. If you want something good you have to pay for it. I tried all the kershaws and CRKT and so on. I couldn't keep an edge, poor quality, rust. Save a little extra money and buy something good. I would rather buy one good knife than have to fork out $40-50 every couple months to buy a new cheap knife. Minnimum would be benchmade and go up from there, Emerson, microtech, chris Reeves, strider, and many others.

I am thinking about taking it apart and either sanding and polishing the liners, or painting a clear coat over the top of them.

Ive had my CRKT M18 for 4 years and never had it rust, it is AUS 8 Stainless and has a flipper, i did have a CRKT M16 before and it did rust. i would suggest trying the M18.

hot potato and motor oil. really.
bake a potato. take it out of the oven and insert the blade into it for 20 mi. pull the knife out and submerge the blade in NEW CLEAN motor oil. after it cools wipe it down.
