Crime Pays
Being raised in rural family with strong values of what is right and what is wrong, I was a firm believer in the old adage “crime doesn’t pay”. Unfortunately, in this modern age blamelessness and irresponsibility, the lines between right and wrong have been blurred to point where everything is a grey area. Today, some of the biggest criminals no longer where ski masks to steal from the innocent, but rather prefer the feel of a fancy suit and tie. Am I speaking of the mafia? No. Politicians? Sometimes. The criminals I am referring to are the attorneys whose only purpose in life is gain wealth via lawsuits.
At one point in time, the lawsuit was a legal method of resolving a debt, ensuring payment, or the finishing of a business transaction. Now it is the most common form of highway robbery endorsed by our legal system. No longer are they concerned with what is right or wrong, but rather, how big of a settlement can be gotten from this. Responsibility means nothing. Pour hot coffee on yourself? Let’s sue McDonalds! Got cut on glass while breaking into someone’s house? Let’s sue the homeowner! Did you get shot by some crack-head in a gone-wrong drug deal? Let’s sue the Gun Manufacture!
The purveyors of our legal system have prostituted themselves for settlements which rival Major League Baseball salaries. They are blinded by greed and have forgotten the purpose of law is to define the rights and wrongs of society. Law was not designed as a method of transferring blame resulting from one’s actions into the financial responsibility another.
There are those who still believe in the old purposes of law. They stand in courtrooms everyday going head to head with those who no longer represent justice, to ensure those who have violated the law are kept from society. They, along with law enforcement officers and common citizens, form the line between the criminal element and the law abiding citizen. The problem is we are losing. Judges are awarding settlements to the criminal element in increasing numbers and it must be stopped.
In this nation, we must get tough on crime. We must pass legislation which limits the powers of litigating attorneys and stops their free-for-all ravaging of common citizens wallets. My thought is simple. If you are injured or killed during a crime, you forfeit all rights for civil recompensation whether brought by the criminal, their families or a designated representative. Crime should not be a source of profit and the attorneys who make a living at our expense should no longer be allowed to operate within the legal system. It is time we redraw the line between right and wrong with permanent marker.
