Crack in 638 frame?

Anyone know if this is a crack in the frame of a 638? Right above the cylinder where the barrel meets the frame. Looks like a squiggly line

That is a pretty good picture you took, I would send that picture to S&W and see if they wish to send you a return label. Certainly does look like a crack but I don't know how we'd know for sure.

It looks like a scratch or spyder web crack in the finish, but I do not have the revolver in hand so as to tell. Do you, or are you just looking at a picture?

If you have it is hand, you should be able to make a more educated evaluation as whether it is more than just "skin" deep.

The alloy frames of the air-weight J-Frames are painted silver to match the stainless steel barrel and cylinder. Harsh solvents and other chemicals will make that finish flake and peel. What you are most likely seeing is the flaking of that finish.

Thanks everyone, just the Finish cracking now that I have it in hand. That picture was from the seller.

I picked the gun up this morning and plan to run some rounds through it this evening. Couldn't pass it up at the price.... Even with the cosmetic issues.

I removed the grips and it looks like there's some putting under them on the butt of the gun. Deeper than the finish. Should I be worried about this getting worse? I bought it for an extra nightstand/tackle box gun

First of all, did you thoroughly clean the gun?

If not, do so before shooting it.

Second, the 638 airweight series has an aluminum frame. I doubt what you are seeing is actually pitting. Try and clean it off first, then get back with us.
