Cowboy Action... OK I think I'm about ready to play

still need to change out the grooved grip frames on my Montados... being a total newbie I was hoping I could take a piece of plastic electrical tape & lay it over the grooves & wrap over the sides & re-install the grips... at least until I can get new grip frames ( I know it's subjective, but thoughts from you regular shooters or guys that run some contests... do you think that would be a problem ??? ) I'm not going to come in & beat anyone on my 1st time... I plan on getting a couple new grip frames without the grooves, just haven't had the time or the cash yet to do it...

I did get my revolver load finalized & filed my front sights so both guns now shoot to point of aim with a medium load of Trailboss & a 250 grain bullet

my shotgun is a vintage exposed hammer Husquvarna double, barrels trimmed to 21"

lever action is an early ( pre safety ) fancy grade Rossi with full engraving & better grade wood ( maybe a bit fancy for cowboy abuse, but I paid less than for a new one, & the quality is much better ) I'll be shooting a medium power 38 special load that shoots nice groups & shoots to point of aim...

I now have a couple pairs of button fly jeans with suspender buttons added & a couple pairs of suspenders, got 3 pairs of cowboy boots, & 2 hats... still not sure about a shirt (s) yet is a 3 button henley OK, or does in need to be a full button shirt ???

one question... I sweat alot when on my practice range & generally take a hand towel out with me to mop my head... been going to get a couple big bandanas for use during the matches... I've also heard that straw hats are not allowed... I have one vintage felt hat, & one that is a name brand, but looks like swade ( spelling ) what do you guys use to keep dry or towel off sweat during matches

next match is in two weeks... I'd like to go & try competing for the 1st time, if they'll allow me to run my Montados

any thoughts or suggestions ???

if you know the club you are going to, give them a call ahead of time...at my club we would let you come out with your guns as is for a while, as for hat, straw is ok unless you are shooting B-Western or Classic Cowboy, just sign up in your age group (as in 49er, which is from age 49 and up, Wrangler is 36 and up and so on) and you can wear the straw hat, and cloting is really relaxed in those CATEGORIES......I shoot 49'er.....the main thing is get out there and shoot :D

Bandannas are fine. There is no requirement for a hat except in B Western or Classic Cowboy.

Suggested costuming is "try to look western".

Leather footgear, long sleeve shirt, jeans and you are good to go.

I cannot conceive of anyone at a monthly match complaining about your Montados. Annual/ Regional/ National matches, yes.

Everything that Carolina Cowboy and Noz said goes at my club, too. I don't shoot there much because the Saturday matches are at the same time as my skeet matches (oh the heresy!), but I know that they're so excited when somebody new shows up that they'll wave just about every rule, at least for a while, in order to give you the opportunity to shoot.
