Counterfeit Leupold!!!!!

Today I went to see about an add in our local sales paper. It was for a Leupold Mark v 4-14.50 Long Range Rifle Scope. The guy was asking $360.00 and stated that it was new still in the box. Of course like anybody would do I jumped all over it. When I arrived at his place and got the scope in my hands I could just tell there was something different then most leupolds I have owned or held. It just did'nt seem like I was holding a $1200 scope in my hands. There was Leupold L logo on one of the windage caps that was slightly off center, that was my first clue. Then in the box was one little piece of paper that had instructions on it. I know that if you buy a scope that's worth anything it will come with at least a 25 page instruction booklet. It had no flip up scope covers just cheep ones with little bunjies. The actual optics looked good, the illumination feature was awsome but I could just tell something was wrong. It had Leupold Mark V on the bottom of the scope and everything. I ended telling the guy I thought it was fake and he got mad and I left with no scope. When I got home I looked it up and it sounds like this starting to be a big problem so Id thought I write about it on here just to get the word out. I had never even thought about a counterfit scope but it looks like something we have start looking out for. If you know scopes you can tell right away. Anyways just throwing it out there watch your backs!!!

fake Leupold

A phone call to Leupold and knowing the serial number will clear the air.

They can tell you immediately if the number is suspect.

My friend owns a Leupold fake (Mark 4 tactical). He thought it was funny and bought it for like 60 bucks knowing fully what it was... There is absolutely no comparison. The windage/elevation caps feel mushy, it looks like you are looking through a black tunnel with a light at the end, the illumination bleeds all over the inside of the tube body.

Just too easy and there's more than enough greed to keep fakes coming. Just makes more sense to buy from a legit retailer even if it costs a bit more.

Gotta love this for the dimwits at Leupold. They have advertised for years that all of their scopes are American made. Well folks, that's a lie and Leupold is now paying the price for it. They contracted to have these scopes made to their specs in China. Had the dimwits at Leupold investigated the patents rights in China they would have known that when you abandon the Chinese producer, you also abandon the patent rights. This "fake" scope deal has been going on for years. Leupold sued in Chinese court and were handed their butts and rightfully so. I have no regard for Leupold in this situation as they were selling an import scope as American made. So much for their ethics. What is bad is that now Leupold has put a prospective buyer in a bad situation of spending a lot of money on a non-Leupold scope. As it has been with all AMERICAN MADE products, buyer beware.

That has nothing to do with these counterfeit scopes. If they made a "genuine" copy of a Leupold they couldn't sell them for the knockoff prices. Even if Leupold was still made 100% in the US you would still be seeing these knockoffs. As they say on their own site, it is stupid easy to spot the fakes if you know what to look for. The fakers are not copying the Leupold design, they are taking a cheap scope and dressing it up like a Leupold.
