Count on a vintage gun when the sh** hits the fan?

Does anyone count on one of the ol'boys for protection in this day of space age/wonder guns? Can the ol'boys still be counted on? I put 225rds through my new to me 38 yr old colt cobra today and it is sweet, after a few hundred more rounds this ol'boy could become my primary carry piece, should I feel out of touch/outdated counting on this relic in a time of need?

I regularly carry a 1963-vintage S&W Model 19, so yes.

In the past I've also carried a WW II vintage Radom 9mm. Extremely reliable, but it's been retired for regular carry now that I have guns that are more suitable.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

I must be gettin long in the tooth. A quality gun that is only 30 or 40 years old is definately a carry/shooter and not a "vintage" gun to my thinkin.

For open carry I depend on a short lug 6" mod 19. For conceiled back up I carry a first run mod 36.

I do carry snubbie 686 and 696 but am not convinced stainless is here to stay. Just got em right.

Sam...my favorite 9mm is the 9X32R

40 yrs old? Thats still a kid.I have a S&W built between 1906 and 09 that I might use after I finish it for a backup.THe reason only a backup? Its in 32 S&W long so not much knockdown.

I'm with C.R. Sam. Maybe it is the teeth, but I consider anything less than 15 - 20 years of age (that hasn't been shot to pieces - which is rare) as damn near new.

Just finished cleaning up a Colt Thunderer that belongs to my father. A shade pitted in the barrel, but I wouldn't hesitate to carry it. In another 3 years it'll mark it's hundreth.

Does old count my 1927 Argentine 1911 clone that outshoot's pistols costing thousands more and eats anything you feed it? I don't think so! ;)

I'm really having a hoot with my model 1917 S&W in .45 acp and .45 AR (auto rim) calibers. I call it my WHOOOMPH gun...because that's the sound it makes when fired. Check out the sound next time Indiana Jones fires his in the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's a blast.

Anyone carrying one of these is not prone to hernias, big gun make big noise. Also makes nice big holes.

Don't you guys know that bad guys have gotten tougher and now have skins like body armor. In the old days (anything over 10 years ago), people who were shot in the right (or wrong) place with a .38 Special or even a .32 ACP just up and died.

Now, it takes at least a .454 Casull to even make a mark on the tough hide of a bad guy. Or at least that is what the gunzines tell us as they try to peddle the latest whompem stompem handgun caliber.

got a 1940's Makarov....just got a nice little Uncle Mikes holster for it. What I carry as primary. [[aint got no secondary at this point]] I ever afford a nice 1911 Colt .45, the Mak will become either my secondary or my GF's carry weapon. :)

Still have several of my "old" Revolvers. My *&* model 13, 19, 4 inch and my model 36, 2 inch.(1 7/8 in?) I also have my original charter arms .44 bulldog. Old yes but I carry them all and trust them. I'm from the old wheel gun school. I like my Auto's but I always have a sweet spot for my revolvers. Kinda like your first love I guess.

I still carry my 1960s swedish police Walther PP 32acp,and feel dang right armed to the hilt with that..I know the limits to the caliber and I practice shooting for the head ,throat, groin, and kneecap shot's..That is my all time never leave home with out gun..

I wouldn't feel naked with any of the following in my collection: S&W 1917 45 acp, Colt Police Positive 38 Special, S&W Model 10 38 Special, S&W Model 60 38 Special, or S&W Model 37 38 Special. Regards, Richard.

Buncha young bucks!

I gotta 1900 Oberndorf Swede Mauser M-96 that shoots and looks like it was made yesterday. The Bulgarian Makarov is mid 50's as is the Romanian SKS. The Turk Mauser is 1945. I have a Western Field 22 LR from the 20's that belonged to my dad. My Crossman pellet gun dates to 1961.

They all shoot fine.

I shot on a "guns Made before 1900" match last week using a Model 1880 Smith&Wesson .44 Russiam Double Action revolver. Very accurate gun with a very fast, smooth double action. Loaded with modern Fiochhi ammunition it is still a very efective weapon.

Hahaha, 38 years old Cobra, you call that old? I shoot a Colt New Service revolver quite frequently. Yeah, I would count on it. Never had a problem with it.

MrBlonde, what caliber is your Newservice. I've owned .44-40 and .44 specials, wish I still had them. Got lot's of parts for one but don't have the main ingredient a frame.
With a frame I put together a spiffy .44 special...have new barrel and cylinder.

right now my K40 Kahr is real pissed because i am splitting my time between it and my Ruger Speed Six with Eagle rosewood Secret Service grips and a Wolff's reduced power hammer spring.
it is a touch heavy but those six .357 125 grain SJHP's are a poerful comfort to an old man like me. besides that rosewood feels a lot better against my skin than the slide serations of the K40.
